I think by reducing the height of the check dams as much as possible they will eventually fill up and cover over with sediment. The other aspect that concerns me is the time of year this fix will take place. How are you going to stabilize the site when it will be difficult to get things growing in the dead of winter? I would hope that you would at least have double silt fencing at the bottom of the fix to avoid further migration of sediment into Chaney Creek. Bob, before the Corps signs off on this change, please respond regarding stabilization. Thanks, Brad -----Original Message----- From: Steenhuis, Joanne [mailto:joanne.steenhuis@ncdenr.gov] Sent: Wednesday, December 02, 2009 2:55 PM To: Shaver, Brad E SAW Subject: FW: Proposed broad swale across FEQ/Main Pump Station Corridor Brad, I would suggest the use coconut matting to line the channel because I am concerned that the straw matting may not last long enough until the vegetation stabilizes. Will the coconut matting be enough to hold the sediment? I'm OK with the use of willow staking as necessary to help stabilize the area but if done now will they do anything?. In addition, I would like to reduce the height of the check dams (both or either) as much as possible. Otherwise, I really do not have any major concerns with the proposal and will copy it to the file for future compliance. Please forward this, along with your comments, to Bob. 1 Thanks! I have worked with our engineers to develop the approach shown in the attached file to restore the corridor to its preexisting condition. Please review the file showing a proposed broad swale across FEQ/Main Pump Station Corridor. I think this swale may be the closest thing to sheet flow that we can create. The swale will be planted with hydrophytes at some yet to be determined density. The project manager has indicated if approved, he would like me onsite when this work was being conducted to help resolve any potential issues. Please let me know your thoughts. Bob Robert T. I have tried to address the issues you have raised below. Please let me know if this is acceptable. 1. Stability of Channel - We will have the contractor seed the newly excavated swale with twice the recommended density of winter rye prior to laying the mat. We know we will lose some to rot but should be able to vegetate channel dependent on the amount of water in the swale. In addition, MPI staff will plant Juncus effuses on two centers throughout the swale. Travis and I will be talking with City about the potential for adding some willow stakes, but I cannot guarantee anything at this point. 2. Check Dam Height - We have revisited this issue and determined the height of the check dam cannot be reduced because of size of the rock and the need to have water flow through the 6" above grade portion of the check dam before flowing into the swale. If the check dam was shorter water would just be flowing directly into the channel across the top of the structure. The contractor is currently planning to complete this work by hand. As such, I am sure they are not going to use any more rock than absolutely necessary. 3. Matting - A 100% biodegradable coconut matting will be used as opposed to straw matting.
