Hello,
I am emailing you today because I had a few issues with your shoreline stabilization project application. When going
through your application and the pictures you provided, I noticed that there is clearing of trees and grading within the
buffer. As per the Catawba River Basin Buffer Rules, this is not allowed. The first 30' from Full Pond around Lake
Norman are to be left vegetated and unaltered. As you can see in the photo I have provided, there used to be several
trees within the buffer. Based upon my calculations, a property with 5160 sq. ft. of buffer (172' of shoreline x 30' buffer)
requires 31 trees in order to maintain a stable, vegetated buffer. As such, I will be placing this project on hold until 31
trees are replanted back into the buffer. These trees must be 3" or greater at shoulder height, 6'-8' tall with a well -
established root ball, and of a species that is native to the area. The trees must be placed randomly throughout the
buffer and not clumped into one area. There are several local nurseries that can aid you in finding the appropriate trees
for this. Concurrently, he entirety of the buffer shall be returned/maintained in natural cover (e.g. eight (8) inches of
leaf litter, pine straw, and/or mulch). I will need to see photographic documentation of said trees at several stages:
being delivered, being planted, once established, and again after leaf fall in the Autumn. If you have any further
questions, feel free to contact me.
