MONITORING YEAR 1 REPORT
Supplemental Information
Bethel Branch Buffer Mitigation Bank Parcel
Wildlands Holdings IV, LLC’s Cane Creek Nutrient Offset and Buffer Mitigation Bank
This supplemental information is provided to show that the old pond bed at Bethel Branch Mitigation
Bank Parcel has been replanted to exceed the target planting density. On March 2, 2020 a total of 400
additional trees were planted in the pond area to augment the as-built planting. Tree species included
silver maple (Acer saccharinum), tag alder (Alnus serrulate), river birch (Betula nigra), silky dogwood
(Cornus ammomum), green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica), black gum (Nyssa sylvatica), sycamore
(Platanus occidentalis), swamp chestnut oak (Quercus michauxii), and cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda).
As requested, data was collected by Wildlands in five supplemental random vegetation plots on March
3, 2020. The plots were circular with an area of 100 square meters. All five of the plots were within the
old pond area (Figure 1). The planting density in all plots now exceeds the MY5 success criteria of 260
stems per acre (Table 1). Plot densities range from 526 stems per acre in vegetation plot 1 to 850 stems
per acre in vegetation plot 4, with an average density of 696 stems per acre. Table 1 also compares the
means from the previous random plots submitted in the As-Built & Baseline Monitoring Report
Supplemental Information in November 2019. The mean stems per acre across the five random plots is
now 696, surpassing the previous count of 251 stems per acre, the targeted planting density of 607
stems per acre, and the required density of 260 stems per acre. Vegetation plot photographs are
attached.
The bare areas in the old pond bed were seeded with annual rye and covered in straw in October 2019,
after the as-built site walkthrough. The rye sprouted and provided excellent stability to topsoil,
particularly at the tops of streambanks. In order to encourage additional vegetation and tree growth this
spring, soil conditioner in the form of 50% compost and 50% biochar was spread over the previous bare
areas in March 2020. A supplementary seed mix of 90% permanent native herbs and grasses and 10%
temporary grasses was spread over these areas. In addition, Humic Plus (soil enhancer) was spread over
the entire pond area to stimulate growth in the newly seeded and planted areas.
Wildlands will continue to monitor the health and growth of the vegetation in the old pond bed, as well
as across the rest of the site, and data will be presented in the annual monitoring reports each year.
