Re: Sedgefield Country Club – Professional Short Game Area
To whom it may concern:
With 23 years experience working on golf course design with numerous golf clubs, golf course architects,
and tournament host organizations throughout the world for the purpose of hosting PGA TOUR-
sanctioned tournaments and watching our members practice and work on their game throughout the
year from event-to-event to refine their craft, I have had the opportunity to be in position to understand
the needs of TOUR players practice requirements. As the once Greater Greensboro Open, now the
Wyndham Championship, has grown in stature on the PGA TOUR’s schedule, so have the expectation
from our members as to their experience for the week at Sedgefield Country Club whi ch serves as the
host venue. The Wyndham Championship is th e final event on the regular schedule prior to the Playoffs.
The players in the field at Sedgefield like to work on refining their game prior to the competition
commencing and before and after each competitive round of which there are four rounds, Thursday
through Sunday. The current short game practice area at Sedgefield, as may be adequate for general
membership demands throughout the season , is not adequate for the demand on the turf to support
the intense practice regimens of TOUR players and does not have adequate space to handle up to 156
players at some time throughout the day.
The overall short game area needs to accommodate as many players as possible, especially in the event
of inclement weather and suspension then resumption of play where all 156 players commence at a
single time to warm-up prior to resuming play. The components of a professional short game area
consist of ideally multiple green (turf area maintained at .125” or less) site s (min 7,500 sf) to facilitate
numerous shots being hit into each without interference from another players shot and spread out the
ball marks created when each shot lands on the surface, a large fairway (turf area with a height of cut
near .400”) practice area large enough (min 15,000 sf) to accommodate numerous players at one time
and to handle the divots created from each practice shot to allow practice for the week from up to 156
players each day Monday through Friday and 75 players Saturday and Sunday. The design of the fairway
is such to create numerous types of challenges the player will face on the golf course as each golf course
is designed differently. Several bunkers (areas of sand) need to be included for players to practice their
bunker recovery skills and test the sand for how the ball will react when landing on the chipping green

surface, and areas of rough (turf areas maintained at a height of 2.75” or greater) with various slopes to
practice their recovery skills and variety of recovery shots (min 5,000 sf).
The short game area design submitted for review and permitting achieves these goals and objectives
and otherwise could not be achieved on other areas of land within Sedgefield Country Club as the
location needs to be near the clubhouse, main practice area and number one and ten tees. The current
area could not be enlarged enough to accommodate the needs outlined and thus is sited accordingly.
Please take these factors into consideration as you review this request.
Sincerely,
Stephen Wenzloff
