Stream & wetland project
• 4 sq.mile drainage area; slate belt
• Bordered by major road and railroad - easement goes to ROW boundaries
• Cows offsite for 3 months
• Mica creek - culvert start
• Existing wetlands - 6-12" depressions (not quite ditches), pasture compaction, 2 open
water areas
• Soils discussion - hydric inclusions in low areas - reestablishment vs creation when less
hydro manipulation
• Three tribs - all spring fed - small drainage, intermittent, 2 preservation, 1 restoration
• Rocky river start may be P2 unless can back water up 1' for 100' on Siler City land,
channel incised, add structure?
• Extra buffer - wooded, few to no invasives
• Mica start - culvert perched, bring up, do work in the RR ROW but start credit setback,
keep B channel? Bedrock spots, gravel & sand, restoration ok
• Rocky river wetlands - soil sample definitively hydric, reestablishment & rehabilitation,
more area wet than currently mapped, slightly raise depression areas
• Rocky river channel - no buffer (small patches of privet & rose), not very incised (more
so at bottom towards bridge), getting out into floodplain (wrack & significant sediment),
banks cut lateral adding sediment to channel - not very stable, gravel, cobble, sand,
bedrock, large sediment bars, some sinuosity - will increase, invasive parrot feather, basis
for relocating channel is slightly raising bed, increasing floodplain access & wetland
connection, creating stable banks
• Olivia - on fence with restoration relocation due to ok bedform & mussels present
• Schist - restoration, flowing well, bedrock present, will extend to new channel
• Gypsum - preservation, small flow, upper channel ok, no defined channel at bottom -
concern about flow / turning into a wetland, may need enhancement
• Dolomite - preservation, remove culvert, enhancement lower reach- concern about
keeping it a channel (not a wetland)
• Wrap-up - JD important for wetlands, tribs channel connections important, large buffers
& no crossings - very good, Olivia to key out mussels
