It is not valid for Archaeological Resources. You must consult separately with the Archaeology Group. PROJECT INFORMATION Project No: B-4844 County: Wayne/Duplin WBS No.: 38614.1. FD2 Document Type: Fed. Aid No: BRZ-1958(5) Funding: State X Federal Federal Yes X No Permit Permit(s): Typ e(s): Project Description: Replace Bridge No. 117 on SR 1502 (Arthur Davis Road)/SR 1958 (Bennetts Bridge Road) over Northeast Cape Fear River (off -site detour planned, assume no improvements). SUMMARY OF HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPES REVIEW DESCRIPTION OFREVIEWACTIVITIES, RESULTS, AND CONCLUSIONS: HPOWeb reviewed on 2 April 2015 and yielded no NR, SL, DE, LD or SS properties in the Area of Potential Effects (APE). Wayne and Duplin Counties current GIS mapping, aerial photography, and tax information indicated a mostly wooded APE with wetlands and some cleared residential and agricultural properties at the SW end (viewed 2 April 2015). The APE intersects a large parcel to the S and SE of the existing bridge on which stand several unexceptional mid -to -late twentieth-century houses (two are trailers), approximately 1000 feet and more distant (PIN: 352000999833). The parcel also contains the George Bennett Cemetery, located approximately 750 feet S of the bridge and 120 feet east of the SR 1958 (Bennetts Bridge Road) centerline. The cemetery appears active (earliest gravestone dated 1904, most recent 1998); while it is not architecturally significant and situated beyond likely project impact, its presence should be noted and appropriate protection, if necessary, provided during construction. Bridge No. 117, constructed in 1952, is not eligible for the National Register according to the NCDOT Historic Bridge Survey as it is not representative of any distinctive engineering or aesthetic type. Google Maps "Street View" confirmed the absence of critical historic architectural and landscape resources in the APE (viewed 2 April 2015). No architectural survey is required for the project as currently defined. WHY THE AVAILABLE INFORMATION PROVIDES A RELLABLE BASIS FOR REASONABLY PREDICTING THAT THERE ARE NO UNIDENTIFIED SIGNIFICANT HISTORIC ARCHITECTURAL OR LANDSCAPE RESOURCES IN THE PROJECTAREA: APE extends 700 feet from end of the existing bridge (NE -SW) and 100 feet to either side of the SR 1958 (Bennetts Bridge Road) centerline (SE -NW) to encompass proposed construction activities. The comprehensive county architectural surveys and related publications, as well as later investigations, recorded no properties in the APE (J. Daniel Pezzoni, ed. Glimpses of Wayne County, North Carolina - An Architectural History (Goldsboro: Wayne County Historical Association, 1998); Jennifer F. Martin, Along the Banks of the Old Northeast.' the Historical and Architectural Development of Duplin County, North Carolina (Rose Hill, NC: Duplin County Historical Foundation, Inc., 1999)). County GIS/tax materials and other visuals support the absence of significant landscape and architectural resources. No National Register -listed properties are located within the APE or along the proposed off -site detour route. Should any aspect of the project design change, please notify NCDOT Historic Architecture as additional review may be necessary.
