Inspection Summary:
After meeting the operator and consultant at the site, I discussed the proposed operation with WaRO DWR staff, David May,
Robert Tankard, and Will Hart. The DWR staff stated the area to be mined had been previously removed from the permitted
land application area, and that the WaRO DWR had no reason that permitting of the proposed mining operation should not
be allowable.
Following the initial inspection, the flow direction that the mining discharge water was to be routed was changed by the
operation owner, and his site consultant, Ken Elliott. The mine dewatering discharge route change was determined to be
acceptable as well, by the DWR.
A follow up inspection was conducted on 03/06/2018, by WaRO DEMLR Staff, Jay Edwards, Bradley West, and Thom
Edgerton. Based on our inspection and further review, the existing ditch system in which the mine dewalering discharge is
proposed to be routed along an existing hunting path, and then on to the Currituck Sound, has been determined to be
acceptable to proceed with NPDES SW Permitting,
The WaRO recommends that NCG020923 be issued, as proposed (The mining permit 27-54 was issued on 3/19/2018)
