The operation was not actively discharging while we were at the site. We stopped by the office to meet with Andy Purifoy. We discussed the permit and that vegatated slopes would improve stability. We also mentioned rip rap added to the outlet of the first stilling pond would increase stilling time and more rip rap added to each of the rock check dams would increase detention time and help. reduce velocity and scour. Rip Rap added to the wier of the final stilling cells prior to the discharge would increase retention in the first cell and baffles in each of the cells to reduce short circuiting to improve stilling. Raising the elevation of the riser inlet to increase storage time would improve water quality of the discharge. Also, Rip Rap as an energy dissapatior beneath and around the discharge pipe would improve water quality of discharges. It was discussed with the operator that the improvements as outlined would improve water quality, but since a discharge was not observed, may not all be required and should be utilized as neceassary to maintain permit compliance. Seeding and mulching along the slopes between the first stilling pond and the 2 stilling cells prior to the discharge are expected for better compliance with the mining permit and will also improve water quality. Additional visits are expected.
