The purpose of this site visit is to gather information to develop a new general
permit for non metallic mineral mining.
1. We picked this site because it was one of the proposed mines that had not been
issued a mining permit. We could not issue the stormwater permit until the
mining permit had been issued. While assessing the potential of this site to
provide information for rewriting GP02, I noticed that sand mines were pretty
clean operations at least in the coastal counities. All the sand mines I've seen
have been on fairly flat land which Minimizes the chance fora point source
discharge. In cases where the land had some slope, all water was drained back
into the mine pit and a discharge permit was not required. Looking at the data I
gathered on mines, rock quarries appear to be causing the most sediment
discharges.
2. Sutton mine #1 was approximately 70% away from being closed. There was no
evidence of a discharge from this site. Therefore, this facility does not have or
require a stormwater permit.
3. At Sutton mine #2, mining activities had already begun. There was no
evidence of a discharge at the site at this stage of the mining activity. The plans
show that the mining pit will be dewatered using a small settling basin a few
hundred yards from the mine. This settling basin has not been constructed yet.
Once the settling basin is built , the mine dewatering will be discharged through
it.
