The turbidity of the discharge sample collected on December 9, 2002 was 90.3 NTU, which is above the maximum allowable of 50 NTU. Heavy rains during the fall, including one event in which we received 6 inches over a few hour span, have caused considerable siltation of the quarry dewatering sump system from localized runoff into the quarry. The retention time in this sump system has been drastically reduced due to this siltation and the system must be dug out or a new sump shot into the quarry floor. Plant personnel are currently working on correcting this situation and expect to have the problem corrected by mid -February. First quarter samples for 2003 should reveal that this problem has been satisfactorily corrected. Should you require any additional information do not hesitate to contact the writer. The turbidity of the discharge sample collected on June 11, 2002 was 53.3 NTU, which is above the maximum allowable of 50 NTU. The source of this non-compliance was traced to a faulty float switch on the pit pump on the lower bench of the quarry. The switch was causing the pump to operate too frequently and maintain too low a water level in the pump basin, thus allowing insufficient settling time and solids which had settled to be picked up by the pump suction. The float switch was adjusted and additional sampling performed on June 25 revealed that the discharge turbidity was 2.2 NTU, which is more in line with normal levels. We believe this situation is now under control and plant personnel will be more aware of the need to maintain the water level at sufficient depth. Should you require any additional information do not hesitate to contact the writer. Sincerely, Hanson Aggre ates Southeast, Inc. Steve Howiler, PE Environmental Mgr.
