Benchmark Exceedance: Stormwater Samples for 1 st 6-Month Period 2017
Dear Mr. Smith:
Hanson Aggregates is notifying the Department that during the 15t 6-month period 2017, the
person collecting stormwater samples at Outfall SDO-1 forgot to collect samples for TPH. Outfall
SDO-1 is our designated outfall for vehicle maintenance activities, and we have always collected
TPH samples as required. However, at several of our sites, VMA run-off is directed to the Pit
where it co -mingles with wastewater, and TPH sampling is not required. That is not the case at
the Raleigh Quarry, and we certainly regret not collecting the sample.
I didn't see the 30-day notification requirement until I completed the DMRs this week and saw the
actual submittal timing stated on the benchmark exceedance form. Please see the attached
completed benchmark exceedance form, in the second period-2017, on 12/06/2017 with a total
rainfall of 0.24 inches, TPH samples were collected at Outfall SDO-1 with a resulting TPH
concentration of <5.0 mg/L. We will be sure to continue sampling for TPH at the SDO-1 Outfall.

designated as trout waters; 25 NTU for all lakes and reservoirs, and all salt waters; 50 NTU for all other streams and surface waters. Turbidity may be monitored at the
Stormwater Discharge Outfall. Alternatively, the permittee may choose to monitor turbidity in the receiving water, directly upstream and downstream of the discharge.
