Notification of Stormwater TSS and Turbidity Exceedance and Tier I Response
To whom it may concern:
Please find enclosed one original signed stormwater discharge monitoring report (DMR) containing total
suspended solids and turbidity exceedances. The stormwater sample was taken on June 20, 2019. Martin
Marietta received the sample results, containing the total suspended solids and turbidity exceedances, on
June 26, 2019. The results triggered a Tier I response for turbidity and total suspended solids, as the
sample was the first valid sample result of the period and the previous period's sample results were below
the total suspended solidsand turbidity benchmark. Due to field turbidity results, regional environmental
staff performed a site review at the time of sampling, on June 20, 2019, to identify and evaluate possible
causes of the exceedance. implementation of actions identified during the evaluation will be completed
as required by the general permit.

Stormwater Management Inspection

Inspection Observations: I visited the site and looked at the Land Disturbance stormwater outfall
at which the sample had been collected. The day on which the sample had been collected the employee
who collected the sample left his home at around 6:30 AM and arrived at the quarry at 8 AM, by which
time it was already raining. The sample was collected at 9 AM. On that day approximately 1.6" of rainfall
fell. We are not sure if the time delay from when it started raining to the time the employee collected
the sample may have been a contributing factor; since then the employee has been given guidance.
The sediment trap from which the sample was collected did not appear to be full, but it was difficult to
discern since the day on which the inspection was made the temperature was below freezing. However,
considering the amount of rainfall that fell on the day the sample was collected we believe the turbidity
of the receiving stream would have also been naturally elevated, therefore we do not believe the
stormwater discharge from our sediment trap would have caused the turbidity of the receiving stream
to exceed natural background conditions.
However, in an effort to be proactive we plan to clean out the sediment trap and place new filter stone
at the weir, and rip rap. This should help to minimize the potential for a future exceedance.
Arrangements will be made to have the sediment trap cleaned out.
