Description of review activities, results, and conclusions:
Review of HPO quad maps, HPO GIS information, historic designations roster, and indexes was
undertaken on April 18, 2018. Based on this review, there are several survey sites and properties
over fifty years of age within the APE. A survey was required. Five properties were identified as
requiring in-depth National Register eligibility evaluations, and an Historic Structures Survey
Report was compiled in October 2018. It was determined that two properties are eligible for
listing in the National Register: Edgecombe Fire Lookout Tower (ED1662) and Merrimeade
(ED11312). Three properties, Johnston House and Store (ED1661), Saint Paul AME Zion
Church (ED0055), and Norfleet House (ED1649) were determined not eligible. The State
Historic Preservation Office concurred with these findings on November 15th, 2018. An
assessment of effects will be required for the two determined eligible properties.
