Subject:Sediment loss on HWY 221 - R-2915C
Hey Dave,
I have been touring HWY 221/R-2915C today to look at some issues that occurred over the weekend. We received > 3
inches of rain this past Saturday. Luckily, much of the HWY 221 project is now vegetated. However, we experienced
sediment loss to streams at two stations.
At station 368, the small stream below the DOT Waste Pit experienced severe erosion on the downstream right
bank. Despite being sloped back, protected by coir fiber, and vegetated, we lost approximately 2-3 cubic yards of
bank. We did not find any new sediment in the UT or nr it’s confluence in Old Field Creek, so no pickup occurred. We
checked the pipe outlet, the dissipater pad below it, and surrounding stream, but it looked to be in good shape. I’m
assuming the sediment was carried off and spread out during the storm surge. The scouring that occurred where the
bank failed has taken the stream down to bedrock in some places. Our plan is to reslope the bank but we may need to
add some rip rap at the toe of the bank to prevent further bank loss. I’ll discuss this potential permit modification with
our Raleigh staff, since they did the original permitting for this site.
We also lost 2-3 cubic yards of sediment from the Miller Waste Pit off of Watertank Rd. The crew was in the process of
recovering much of this sediment from the stream (UT to Old Field) when I left this morning.
We can go by these sties tomorrow if you’d like. I’d also like to show you a possible emergency repair that we may need
to do to one of the new pipes (station 13AB, by Watertank Rd) that was undercut by the stormwater this weekend. I’m
in the process of contacting NCWRC to see if we can get clearance to work during the moratorium to fix the issue.
Thanks and see you tomorrow,
Kevin
