Storm Water Management Plan Summary
BMP's Utilized
- Pavement Sweeping (Weekly regenerative air/vacuum) = 65%
- Grassed Swale = 35%
BMP's in Series
E = A + B - ((A x B) / 100)
Pavement Sweeping + Grassed Swale
= 65 + 35 - ((65 x 35) / 100) = 77.25%
Plus Grassed Swale
= 77.25 + 35 - ((77.25 x 35) / 100) = 85.21%
BMP Notes
Pavement Sweeping
Weekly regenerative air/vacuum yielding a 65% removal of TSS per conversations with
Annette Lucas.
Grassed Swale
There are three grassed swales shown on the water quality plan with a green hatch. There
are two swales located in the grassed infield areas between the runway and taxiway and
one swale located on the north side of runway 7-25. Each of the grassed swales are over
300 feet in length. The minimum required length for the grassed swale is 150 feet as
described in the "NCDWQ Storm Water Best Management Practices Manual". Since the
minimum length of the grass swale is more than doubled in each case the BMP has been
counted twice for a removal credit as running in series.

UNDERDRAIN DESIGN FOR WATER QUALITY GRASSED SWALES
Per the North Carolina Division of Water Quality Stormwater Best Management Practices
Manual (section 5.7 underdrain systems) the minimum pipe size of 4 inches and the minimum
number of pipes being 2 shall be used.
The 4" underdrain pipes shall be laid at the same slope as the water quality grassed swale
(0.10%) with a capacity of 0.04 cfs (see attached worksheet).
The average drainage area for the underdrains is 6 feet by 300 feet being the swale bottom. A 1
inch depth of water on the swale bottom would result in 150 cubic feet of water that could be
passed by the dual underdrains in 31.25 minutes.
6 ft x 300 ft x 1 in / 0.08 cfs = 1875 seconds = 31.25 minutes
A request was made to F&R to provide a permeable velocity range base on the available geotech
data (having done soil testing on the site in 2005). Their response was a range between 0.2
inches/hour and 2.0 inches/hour. Given the 5 inches of soil above the underdrain the passing
time of surface water through the soil will range between 2.5 hours and 25 hours with the
average time being 13.75 hours.
Flow to the underdrain:
Q = k (h/L) A
A = (17 in width at bottom + 27 in width at top) / 2 * (5 in high) = 110 si = 0.7639 sf
QUpper end of range = (2.0 in/hr / 12) * (1 ft / 300 ft) * (0.7639 sf) = 4.25e-4 cfs
QLower end of range = (0.2 in/hr / 12) * (1 ft / 300 ft) * (0.7639 sf) = 4.25e-5 cfs
QAverage = (4.25e-4 cfs + 4.25e-5 cfs) / 2 = 2.34e-4 cfs
With a safety factor of 10 the design flow is = 0.00234 cfs
Therefore the capacity 0.08 cfs from the dual 4 inch pvc pipes A 0.10% is okay
* It is noted that the underdrains are being installed to assist in the maintenance of the Grassed
Swale bmp, not to act as a part of the functionality of the bmp.

I will keep a maintenance record on this BMP. This maintenance record will be kept in a
log in a known set location. Any deficient BMP elements noted in the inspection will be
corrected, repaired or replaced immediately. These deficiencies can affect the integrity
of structures, safety of the public, and the removal efficiency of the BMP.
Important maintenance procedures:
- The drainage area of the grassed swale will be carefully managed to reduce the
sediment load to the grassed swale.
- After the first-time fertilization to establish the grass in the Swale, fertilizer will
not be applied to the grassed swale.
The grassed swale will be inspected once a quarter. Records of operation and
maintenance will be kept in a known set location and will be available upon request.
Inspection activities shall be performed as follows. Any problems that are found shall
be repaired immediately.

Description
"Water table" refers to a saturated zone in the soil. It occurs during specified
months. Estimates of the upper limit are based mainly on observations of the water
table at selected sites and on evidence of a saturated zone, namely grayish colors
(redoximorphic features) in the soil. A saturated zone that lasts for less than a month
is not considered a water table.
This attribute is actually recorded as three separate values in the database. A low
value and a high value indicate the range of this attribute for the soil component. A
"representative" value indicates the expected value of this attribute for the
component. For this soil property, only the representative value is used.
