Dear Mr. & Mrs. Schwalm,
NORTH CAROLINA,
Environmental Quality
January 7, 2020
Subject: Permit No. WQ0023185
505 CIyde Farrell Rd SFR
Wastewater Irrigation System
Chatham County
On December 17, 2019, Joan Schneier of the NC Division of Water Resources (DWR), Water Quality
Regional Operations Section, inspected the subject wastewater treatment after replacement of the
earlier manufactured home by a small (two bedroom) guest house. We would like to thank Dan
Schwalm, who was present and assisted during the inspection. The system was slightly non-
compliant on the date inspected due to a few non-functioning spray heads.
The following conditions were noted. The septic tank had been cleaned out before property transfer
in December 2016 and the former and current house have been only occasionally occupied since then.
You stated that you are living off site. No leaks were found in the above ground sand filter area. The
high water alarms worked from the floats and test switches. The chlorinator had tablets present and
in contact. Four of eight spray heads were working well and some of the others might have worked
had the system been run longer. The fence was in good shape.
If someone Iives on site regularly, please make sure that all heads are working properly. This is
usually done by removing one problem head at a time and blowing effluent through the system to
clear out clots and also cleaning the nozzle. Please be sure that the pump remains underwater for
proper cooling. Any nozzle that still does not work will need to be repaired or replaced. If occupation
is only sporadic, please be sure that a few of the heads are working properly.
Constructing a new home at a different location will almost certainly require a permit modification,
even though you are not adding any bedrooms to the four for which you are currently permitted.
Please contact our DWR Central Office, Non -Discharge Permitting Branch, headed by Nathaniel
Thornburg at 919-707-3653 or nathaniel.thornbLirgOncdenr.gov. for further information.
Please see the attached inspection check list. If you have any questions concerning this inspection,
please contact Joan Schneier at (919) 791-4234 or LQan.schneier@ncdenr.gov.
