HomeMy WebLinkAboutMayo CBE - Closure Plan - Appendix A_20200107APPENDIX A ESTIMATED VOLUME OF CCR IN IMPOUNDMENT ASCOM Job Duke Energy — Mayo Closure Description Estimated Volume of CCR in Impoundment Project No. 60603277 Sheet 1 of 2 Computed by CIP Checked by DMS Date 9/27/19 Date 9/27/19 The purpose of these calculations is to estimate the quantity of the coal combustion residual (CCR) material located within the Ash Basin at the Duke Energy Mayo Steam Electric Plant (MAY), located in Person County, North Carolina. These calculations have been developed independent of past calculations/estimates prepared by others, and the actual volume of CCR within the Ash Basin will vary from that presented previously. This variability is primarily due to the differences in data sources/references used in the calculations. These volume estimates will be refined if more accurate data is collected throughout the design process. APPROACH CCR Quantity within the Ash Basin To illustrate the depth of impounded ash, the approximate pre -development topography (see Figure A-1), which is based on the Duke Energy drawing No. RCD-1580 entitled "Mayo E.G.P-Ash Pond Dam Site Plan", was compared to existing topography (see Figure A-2), which is based on topographic and bathymetric surveys performed in October 31, 2015 by WSP. The pre -development topographic data was obtained by digitizing contour data from (Figure A-1). The quantity of CCR material within the Ash Basin was subsequently calculated, using AutoCAD Civil 3D version 2018 (AutoCAD), as the volume differential between the pre -development topographic contours and the existing topographic contours, within the CCR Unit Boundary (see Figure A-3). The quantity of CCR material within the CCR Unit Boundary was calculated to be approximately 5,402,000 cubic yards (CY) or 6,482,400 tons (using an assumed conversion rate of 1.2 tons/CY). There are fringe areas where no bathymetry data was obtained due to safe access concerns and are noted in Existing Conditions Drawing (see Figure A-2). The bathymetry data referenced above (and used in the CCR material quantity calculation) is only representative of the bathymetry contours within the Ash Basin area. In addition, there are pockets of areas where the isopach indicates the historical borrow soil areas within the CCR Unit Boundary, believed to have been used for the original construction of the Ash Basin Dam. It is noted that based on estimates of net CCR disposal rates into the Ash Basin since the dates of these surveys, Duke Energy has reported an in -place CCR tonnage of 6.60 million tons (5.50 million cubic yards) as of June 2019. AECOM understands Duke Energy utilized plant operation data to estimate ongoing CCR placement rates the dates of the survey. Refer to Table 1 for the volume table.
