The stream contains Rainbow Trout, so NCWRC requested a moratorium from Jan 1 to April 15th. Following our request, NCWRC st agreed to delay the moratorium start date until Feb 1. See Marla’s email below. Our contractor has been working the past few months on a small bridge (Avery #56) over Curtis Creek, in Avery County. The coordinates are 36.156376, -81.928297. The st project has a RBT moratorium, which starts Jan 1. Weather issues and a newly discovered septic system within our right of way (can’t make this stuff up…:)) have put them behind on their attempts to be finished by Jan 1. As a result, st I’ve been asked to see if we could extend the moratorium until Feb 1. The work that is remaining should have minimal impacts to the stream, but nonetheless, would be an encroachment on the trout moratorium. Basically, they have the majority of the project completed but need the additional time to finish building the final bridge abutment, take out the temporary bridge, and then stabilize the project area before leaving. The area is very rocky, and has been fairly easy to prevent erosion. I know this is just NCDOT speak, but our projects are visited monthly by our roadside environmental unit and are scored on various metrics. This project has scored a 9 out of 10 on all 4 inspections. That’s all to say the contractor has been very diligent with keeping the work area clean and monitoring all erosion control devices. Since it’s a small bridge, I’m hoping it will have little to no impacts on the trout population there, even with work going on during the moratorium. I’m more than happy to meet you and/or D8 staff at the site if needed. Thanks for the consideration and hope you have a great weekend, Kevin Kevin Hining Division 11 Environmental Officer North Carolina Department of Transportation 336 903 9129 office 828-386-7202 cell 2 kjhining@ncdot.gov 801 Statesville Rd.
