NO ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY REQUIRED FORM This form only pertains to ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESOURCES for this project. It is not Rp -: valid for Historic Architecture and Landscapes. You must consult separately with the Historic Architecture and Landscapes Group.'Q PROJECT INFORMATION Project No: C-5621 County: WBS No: 50146 Document Federal Aid No: CMS-0021(020) Funding: Federal Permit Required? ❑ Yes ® No Mecklenburg Federal Categorical Exclusion ❑ State ® Federal Permit Type: Project Description: Improve the intersection of NC 21 and SR 2697 (Catawba Avenue) in Mecklenburg County. The Area of Potential Effects (A.P.E.) is approximately 1,412 meters (4,634 ft.) long with a variable width. The project includes the construction of two roundabouts on US 21. The project is Federally -funded and will not require Federal permits. No easements will be required. SUMMARY OF CULTURAL RESOURCES REVIEW Brief description of review activities, results of review, and conclusions: The review included an examination of a topographic map, an aerial photograph, and listings of previously recorded sites, previous archaeological surveys, and previous environmental reviews at the Office of State Archaeology (O.S.A.). NC 21 is oriented north -south and SR 2697 is oriented east -west. The topographic map (Cornelius) shows the A.P.E. is located in a developed part of Cornelius and is shaded purple. The shaded area shows less detail about topography and land use. The landform within the A.P.E. appears to be a ridge. There are no streams in the A.P.E. Ridge landforms have a low to moderate potential for prehistoric archaeological sites. The aerial photograph shows that most of the A.P.E. is developed. The west side of US 21 is developed. There are two areas aloniz the east side of US 21 that are wooded. A review of information at the O.S.A. shows no previously recorded archaeological sites within or adjacent to the A.P.E. Most of the A.P.E. is within an area that has been reviewed by the State Historic Preservation Office (HPO). It is a large tract along the east side of Interstate 77. the symbol (lines drawn across the tract) indicates that an archaeological survey was recommended. There is no indication that the survey was conducted or that a report was written. The tract does not appear to be labeled with an ER number, although it may be ER 06-2896. Brief Explanation of why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonably predicting that there are no unidentified historic properties in the APE: The landforms within the A.P.E. have a low to moderate potential for archaeological sites.
