This inspection was conducted to determine whether the facility is being operated and maintained in compliance with NPDES Permit No. NC0032174. Don Raisch, ORC, was present and assisted in the inspection. Overall the facility is being operated and maintained in compliance. Below are items noted during the inspection. Septic/Filter/Pump Tanks: Solids are monitored and removed as needed. It was previously recommended United World Mission consider a septic tank heater to increase biological activity during colder months. This may aid in nitrification during the colder months. Sand Filter: Dosing alternates between zones of sand filter. Mr. Raisch routinely rakes and removes vegetation from the filter bed. Installation of a cover may help limit the introduction of vegetation, reduce maintenance and may help retain more consistent ambient conditions within the filter bed. The facility may also wish to pursue permanent recirculation to further aid in nitrification. Flow Monitoring: Mr. Raisch reports the reported flow may be an over estimation of actual daily flow. All flows are pumped through the facility and effluent is pumped to the discharge location. Due to low flows and effluent pump tank capacity, effluent is only discharged when sampling occurs. Staff may wish to install an inline meter to determine the actual flow into the facility for a more accurate daily flow. NC0032174 17 (Cont.) System is comprised of septic tanks, filter tanks, pump tanks and a single-pass sand filter bed. Solids levels are checked periodically within tanks. Mr. Raisch, ORC, stated he checks ammonia levels with test strips to determine if treatment adjustments are needed. Comment: Permit Yes No NA NE (If the present permit expires in 6 months or less). (Approximately 3 to 1) This is a single-pass sand filter bed. A line has been installed to manually recirculate effluent when ammonia levels begin to rise. It is not designed to automatically recirculate a portion of the sand filter effluent. An inline UV system is installed with a manual wiper. Mr. Raisch reports the bulb is cleaned during daily checks. Spare bulbs and chlorine & dechlor tablets are kept within a building by the sand filter. The bulb are replaced if staff see a rise in fecal numbers. Effluent flow is restricted to 4000 gallons when pumped to allow adequate disinfection. Comment: Effluent Sampling Yes No NA NE Is composite sampling flow proportional?
