RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue is taking a second run at blocking a new federal
license needed by a company to generate and sell electricity from dams along the Yadkin River for another
50 years.
A state attorney on Wednesday unexpectedly asked to join a case involving Alcoa Inc. being considered by
an administrative law judge.
The hearing involved an environmental challenge of the water-quality certificate the state Division of
Water Quality issued to Alcoa this month. Alcoa needs the certificate to renew its license with the Federal
Energy Regulatory Commission.
Perdue is also asking the FERC to block the license. She said Alcoa built the dams to power an aluminum
plant that's now closed.
