We have reviewed the report and offer the following comments. S&ME Inc. performed an archaeological survey of a 10.1-mile proposed natural-gas pipeline corridor through Beaufort and Martin counties. The proposed corridor parallels US 17 on the west side of the highway but is completely outside of the DOT right-of-way. The purpose of the survey was to determine if significant archaeological resources are present within the proposed area of disturbance for the new pipeline construction. S&ME, Inc. discovered eight previously unrecorded historic archaeological sites within the pipeline corridor that consisted of artifact scatter varying from 201h century building -material dumps to probable 201h century domestic sites. No prehistoric archaeological sites were identified. S&ME, Inc. determined that the sites are not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and that further archaeological work in connection with the sites is not recommended. We concur with this recommendation. The pipeline corridor passes across property associated with the NRHP eligible Woolard -Perry House (MT0653) and the centerline runs about 50 feet from an associated cemetery (31MT217, Mason/Rogers Family Cemetery). S&ME, Inc. recommends temporary fencing separating the delineated cemetery from the ground disturbing activities to avoid accidental incursion. S&ME, Inc. also recommends demarcation of the cemetery on the construction plans so planned parking and material storage can be prohibited. We concur that these actions are satisfactory for preventing accidental ground disturbance within the cemetery, given the corridor's currently proposed track. The above comments are made pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's Regulations for Compliance with Section 106 codified at 36 CFR Part 800.
