The sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) from this manhole was discovered on 11/20/2019 at about 10:30am by Mr. Purcell. Mrs. James said that her crew was able to stop the discharge last evening using a pump truck and by clearing a blockage from the sewer line. About 1/4 acre of land downslope of the manhole was saturated/flooded with sewage from the SSO. According to Mr. Purcell the manhole had continued to overflow this morning. The manhole did not overflow while I was onsite from 11am to noon. Mrs. James said they had lowered the level of the influent wet well at the plant to bring down the water level in the manhole. Mrs. James plans to add risers to this manhole to elevate it 4ft to prevent further overflows. This is an acceptable short term solution if it succeeds in preventing further SSOs. Engineers will need to evaluate the collection line and manholes to create a permanent repair for this manhole/sewer line. The sewer line appears to have a depression created by this sunken manhole. It is likely structural modifications will need to be performed to correct this problem in the line. Are manholes accessible? # Are manhole covers/vents above grade? Are manholes free of visible signs of overflow? Are manholes free of sinkholes and depressions? Are manhole covers present? # Are manholes properly seated? # Are manholes in good condition? # Are inverts in good condition? Is flow unrestricted in manholes? Are manholes free of excessive amounts of grease? Are manholes free of excessive roots? Are manholes free of excessive sand? Are manhole vents screened? Are vents free of submergence? Are manholes free of bypass structures or pipes? This manhole has apparently sunk into the ground and created a belly in the trunkline. The rim was not properly connected to the concrete structure. This manhole has been experiencing overflows for probably the past month. There was a blockage in the downstream line which was cleared on 11/20/2019, but the manhole continued to overflow intermittently.
