RE: NCDOT Bridge No. 36 Replacement
7
Pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, the Tribal Historic Preservation Office
(THPO) must review any project involving ground disturbance on federal lands, or utilizing federal
monies. The THPO makes an assessment of probability for archaeological and cultural resources for
each specific project. When applicable, the THPO will include recommendations for the protection of
significant cultural resources based on the individual site assessment.
The EBCI THPO reviewed the Bridge 36 Replacement located in the Cherokee County Community. There
are no properties eligible for the National Register of Historic Places at this location. A Phase I
archaeological survey was performed by NCDOT archaeologist Damon Jones. Shovel test excavations
revealed a thin layer of soil and no artifacts were recovered. There is a low probability for significant
archaeological resources and the THPO predicts this project will not have an adverse effect to any
unidentified cultural resources. If significant archaeological resources are discovered during
construction, please cease work and contact this office immediately.
