Subject: Coal Storage Pile Area — Assessment Clarification — Approval
Mayo Steam Electric Plant
Dear Mr. Draovitch:
On October 11, 2019, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) received
the Coal Storage Pile Area — Assessment Clarification for the Mayo Steam Electric Plant. DEQ
hereby approves the request to submit the findings of the coal pile storage area assessment in a
report separate from the comprehensive site assessment for sources at the facility not associated
with the coal ash impoundment due March 31, 2020 per the schedule set forth in DEQ's May 9,
2019 letter. This approval is based on the anticipated schedule for completing the site work,
analysis of soil and groundwater samples, data review and interpretation, and report submittal not
being compatible with the time frames specified in DEQ's May 9, 2019 letter. Thus, DEQ requests
that Duke Energy provide an anticipated time frame for submittal of this report.
If you have any questions, please contact Steve Lanter (Central Office) at (919) 707-3667.
Sincerely,
Sheila Holman
