Describe the attachments: The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Ferry Division is requesting permission to make slight revisions to the installation of the emergency seawall due to conditions encountered during construction. Existing rip rap at the point, where the ferry basin and sound intersect, has prevented the contractor from successfully installing the sheet pile as it was depicted in the original drawings. Attempts to remove the rip rap were unsuccessful and damage to the sheeting was occurring while attempting to drive the piles. In order to complete the project, the NC DOT Ferry Division is proposing a 10'-5" northward extension of the seawall at WP #3 and WP #4. This would result in the ability to move past the rip rap without attempting to dig it out. The water depth and conditions along the bottom prevent relocation of the rip rap from being a viable option. As depicted in the attached drawings, the linear footage of the seawall would remain the same under this revision because the wall would be shortened by 18'-5" between WP #7 and WP #8. The extension at the point (WP #3 & #4) would encompass an additional 642 square feet of open water impacts, and the reduction near the stacking lanes (WP #7 & #8) would result in negating 902 square feet of open water impacts. Ultimately, open water impacts would be reduced by a total of 260 square feet. With the wall shortened between WP #7 and WP # 8 the sandbags would need to extend an additional 6 linear feet to the north and south in order to close the gap between the seawall and the stacking lanes.
