NEWS RELEASE
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities Department
Nov. 1, 2019
Contact: Gale Ketteler, Public Information Officer, 336-747-7414, gketteler@citvofws.org
Notification of Discharge of Untreated Wastewater
General Statute 143-215.1C requires the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment works to
issue a news release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters. In
accordance with that regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to media in the affected
county
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities had a discharge of untreated wastewater caused by debris in the line on
October 31, 2019 of an estimated 2,125 gallons near 1796 Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem. An estimated 1,594
gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged into Salem Creek in the Yadkin -Pee Dee River Basin.
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Water Resources was notified of the event and
is reviewing the matter. If you see or suspect a sewer spill in Forsyth County or would like more information on sanitary
sewer overflows and how to prevent them, please call City Link 311 or 336-727-8000.
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities maintains and monitors a 1,785-mile wastewater system and 2,322 miles of
water distribution mains. We need your help to prevent sewer overflows and backups in your home and business. Fats,
oils and grease are major contributors to overflows. Grease is a factor in approximately 20% of blockages and overflows.
No one wants raw sewage in their home and it is important to protect your sewer system and the environment by NOT
disposing of these hazards down any drain. Can the Grease and remember No Wipes in Pipes!
