Riverbend Steam Station Closure Summary Riverbend is located off Horseshoe Bend Beach Road near the town of Mt. Holly in Gaston County, North Carolina, on the south bank of the Catawba River. The site originally contained two ash basins, as well as the Dry Ash Stack and the Cinder Pit. As of March 16, 2019, Riverbend has completed excavation and removal of CCR materials from CCR impoundments at the Station. During the period of November 1, 2018 to March 16, 2019, a total of 412,256 tons of ash was excavated from the basins, ash stack, and cinder pit and transported to the Brickhaven Structural Fill site in Chatham County, NC. A cumulative total of 5,351,308 tons of ash has been removed from the site. Duke Energy received a letter from NCDEQ dated July 25, 2019 confirming completion of the required ash excavation at Riverbend under the North Carolina Coal Ash Management Act. Final decommissioning of the ash basin dams remains to be completed. 1
