9. NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION:
Project Setting
The applicants own a .32-acre lot at 237 Bayview Blvd., adjacent a canal off Bogue
Sound, in Atlantic Beach, Carteret County. A single family residence with concrete drive is
situated on the lot. The 110' of shoreline is bulkheaded and a private dock extends 40' out into
the canal. The access dock measures 5' wide X 26' long with a 14' X 14' "T"-shaped platform
at the waterward end. Two 13' X 14' uncovered boatlifts are located on either side of the
platform. Private docks are located on each adjacent riparian property. Water depths at the
end of the dock are -5' MLW. The waters of Bogue Sound along this stretch are SA and
closed to shellfishing.
Project Description
The applicants proposes to add two 5'-wide X 40'-long access docks along their
bulkheaded shoreline. These docks would provide additional access to the two existing 14' X
14' uncovered boatlifts. Also the applicants propose to add four additional tie pilings (two for
each dock) on the outside of the proposed docks creating two additional slips. The access dock
and tie pilings would not extend any farther out into the canal than the existing structure. The
tie pilings to the north would be located approximately 8' from the northern riparian line. The
tie pilings to the south would be located approximately 21' from the southern riparian line.
Both neighbors have waived the required 15' setback.
Anticipated Impacts
As proposed, the project would create four private boatslips. Approximately 400 ff of
shallow water habitat would be shaded by construction of the two access docks. In addition,
another 1,328 fe of Public Trust Waters would be usurped by installation of the access docks
and slips. Construction and/or piling driving related impacts to water quality should be
negligible. There should be no additional impacts to navigation within the canal.
