Planning to convert Roanoke Rapids Mill to Bleach Kraft Mill
(currently brownstock)
Would include expansion of mill - to "world class,"
"state-of-the-art,"etc., facility.
Want to begin planning process - expect to take a long time
Will put together modeling program for Air Monitoring Program and
send proposal to DEM for review
Water -
Makes more sense to expand/convert Roanoke Rapids Mill (cost),
rather than build Halifax site. Same type of products as planned
for Halifax site would be planned for Roanoke Rapids. May develop
at Halifax sometime in future (not next decade)
Champion spending about 1 Billion Dollars/year for capital
expansion, nationwide
Jim Thomlinson - WESTON, Champion's consultant
. Weston has set up QUAL2E model for Roanoke:
2 configurations
a) re Level B - predicted same output
b) refined: additional USGS data incorporated, looked at
stream gradient, included some
of Weston's data, put algae cycle in, temperature; algae
did affect profile, temperature not found to be
reliable/important
Model predicts different output - big (l;ffer_ence
Sensitivity of BOD load (allowable) to small difference in DO
deficit is important, need to examine carefully
Submitted reports to DEM for review. Would like to get back
together within a month's time. Diskette available. If questions,
call Jim Tomlinson (615) 584-3160 before 9:00 A.M.
. Would like to do summer studies in 1990
. Tentative meeting to discuss report: Thursday, May 31 at 10:00 A.M.
