Species lost since 2013 - None. Data Analysis Watershed - Drains northwestern Harnett County. Site is about 1.2 miles above the creek's confluence with the Cape Fear River and lies within Raven Rock State Park. Habitats - Mature forested riparians provide good channel shading here. Instream habitats include runs with pools of various sizes, undercuts, and a few long riffles. Open sunlit located area mid-reach, with downed trees and gravel/cobble bars as noted in 2013. Overall, no changes in habitats since the last basin cycle. 2018 fish community - Good diversity and abundance was observed in 2018, but no intolerants or suckers present (Creek Chubsuckers collected here in 2003 and 2009). However, the NCIBI score improved by 6 points, mostly due to the reoccurrence of sunfish, resulting in an improvement in rating to Good. The reproductive success metric (Percent Sp Multiple Ages) also improved in 2018 (75%, vs 36 % in 2013). Species observed with young of year cohorts in 2018 included Bluehead Chub (n=6), Redbreast Sunfish (n=24), Redfin Pickerel (n=6), White Shiner (n=10), and Tessellated Darter (n=2). 1998 - 2018 - Nineteen fish species are known from this regional reference site, only three of which were not represented in 2018. Overall, the fish assemblage of Avents Creek looks much like it did in it's first three assessments (1998, 2003, and 2009), and appears to have rebounded slightly since 2013. Based on 20 years of fish community monitoring at this site, there have been no long term changes, and water quality remains stable in this rural watershed. Most Abundant Sp.Bluehead Chub (n=236, 49%).Non-Native Sp. Species lost since 2014 - Bluegill (1 collected here in 2014), and Snail Bullhead (6 collected here in 2014). Data Analysis Watershed - A tributary to the Deep River draining the northwestern tip of Moore County, and small adjacent portions of southern Randolph and eastern Montgomery Counties. A low head dam exists about 3.5 river miles downstream at the SR 1425 crossing (Browns Mill Rd), but does not seem to impede fish recruitment to and from this location. Habitats - The mature forested riparian corridor at this regional reference site provides good canopy shading to the stream channel. Instream habitats are typical of the Carolina Slate Belt, with extremely rocky runs and pools, and abundant short riffles, and bedrock chutes. No apparent habitat changes have occurred since the last basin survey. 2018 fish community - A diverse and trophically balanced fish community was collected, including one intolerant darter species (Piedmont Darter). Nine of the 12 NCIBI metrics showed maximum scores of 5 in 2018. Species collected with young-of-year cohorts include Redbreast Sunfish (n=11), Bluehead Chub (n=6), Green Sunfish (n=2), and Redlip Shiner (n=1). 1998-2018 - There are a total of 25 fish species known from this watershed, including two suckers, 5 sunfish (including Largemouth Bass), 8 minnow species, three catfish, and two darter species. Similar to many others in the basin, this slate belt stream is subject to low flows in dry years, thereby potentially influencing fish community abundances. However, this reference site has sustained Good and Excellent fish community ratings over a 20 year period, with 2018 marking its third Excellent fish bioclassification. Data Analysis Watershed - Drains southeastern Guilford County, with its headwaters located to the southwest of the US 421 corridor. This site is located about 7 miles upstream from Lake Mackintosh (built in early '90's, Haw River tributary). Habitats - Riparians are mostly forested here with mature trees, providing good canopy shading to the creek. Instream habitats are primarily embedded sandy runs with bedrock outcrop and boulder side pools. One stick/log riffle within the sample reach. Overall, no apparent habitat changes since the last basin cycle. 2018 fish community - A shift of nine species (3 gains and 6 losses) at this location since the 2013 assessment. First DWR collection here for Threadfin Shad (Dorosoma petenense ), a spring visitor from Lake Mackintosh. Overall, a 10 point drop in the NCIBI score resulted in a rating drop to Good-Fair on account of a 45% decrease in total abundance (163 collected in 2018 vs. 296 in 2013) and 3 fewer species present (including no suckers, collected in all previous samples) and no intolerant species (Piedmont Darter has not been observed here since 1999). However, no fish diseases were observed and several species were represented by young-of-year cohorts in 2018 - Redbreast Sunfish (n=22), Bluegill (n=6), Green Sunfish (n=1), Flat Bullhead (n=1), Bluehead Chub (n=9), Tessellated Darter (n=4), Highfin Shiner (n=4), Creek Chubsucker (n=1), Swallowtail Shiner (n=2), and Spekeled Killifish (n=2). 1999-2018 - There are now 30 fish species known from this watershed. The 2018 NCIBI score is the lowest springtime score seen here to date. However, water quality parameters and a Good-Fair rating in 2018 are not unlike past assessment results. As stated in past reports, the fish community here is likely influenced by flow extremes and recruitment restrictions presented by Lake Mackintosh. Overall, the fish community continues to indicate relatively stable water quality in this mixed use catchment. Most Abundant Sp.Speckled Killifish (n=45, 28%).Non-Native Sp. Threadfin Shad (n=1). 10/26/99 99-70 10 36 Fair 04/20/99 99-21 19 48 Good Species Change Since Last Cycle Species lost since 2013 - Pirate Perch (5 collected in 2013), Creek Chubsucker (11 collected in 2013), Pumpkinseed (1 collected in 2013), Warmouth (1 collected in 2013), Largemouth Bass (3 collected in 2013), Rosyside Dace (13 collected in 2013), and Redfin Pickerel (2 collected in 2013). Species gained since 2013 - Yellow Bullhead (1 collected in 2018, last observed here in 2001). Data Analysis Watershed - Site drains the northern parts of Chapel Hill and Carrboro in southern Orange County, and is tributary to Little Creek, and ultimately Jordan Lake (about 5 miles downstream from this location). This urban reach of Bolin Creek runs parallel with South Estes Dr., between University Mall and an apartment complex. Habitats - Poor to moderate quality habitats with thin riparian, entrenched channel, scoured banks (some hardpan), and mostly sandy substrates mixed with some gravel. Instream habitats are primarily shallow sandy runs and pools with side snags, undercuts, and a few embedded riffles. A large diameter stormwater/sewer pipe in the upper part of the stream reach is becoming more exposed from high flow scouring events. Slightly lower but similar overall habitat score as the last basin cycle. 2018 fish community - Overall six fewer species collected in 2018, including the loss of four pool-dwelling predator species since 2013 (Largemouth Bass, Redfin Pickerel, Warmouth, and Pumpkinseed). Also, further establishment of Eastern Mosquitofish as the dominant taxa, and still no intolerant species. However, a slight improvement in trophic balance of the fish community raised the overall NCIBI score by two points since the last assessment. Also, no fish diseases were observed in 2018. Species with young-of-year present in 2018 - Redbreast Sunfish, Bluehead Chub, and Speckled Killifish. 1998 - 2018 - It is evident that sedimentation and persistently elevated conductivities in this urban watershed have negatively impacted fish species diversity here. But, all 4 fish community assessments at this site since 1998 have rated Good-Fair, suggesting relatively stable stream conditions. Most Abundant Sp.Eastern Mosquitofish (n = 114, 32%).Non-Native Sp. Data Analysis Watershed - Drains the extreme western portion of Chatham county, and the extreme eastern portions of Randolph county. This site is located about 3 miles above the creek's confluence with the Deep River. Habitat - The mature forested riparian corridor here (several trees wide) provides good shading to the creek, and is bordered by rowcrops. Instream habitats are high quality Carolina Slate Belt types, primarily rocky runs with riffles, chutes, and pools. Abundant angular boulder and cobble substrates covered with periphyton make sampling here extremely difficult. No apparent shifts in habitats since 2013. 2018 fish community - Fewest species collected at this location to date, with a 12 point drop in overall NCIBI score since 2013 (3 fewer species in 2018, but most were only represented by one or two individuals in 2013). The most notable changes occured among the three trophic metrics which lost a total of 8 metric points due to a dominance shift back to the Bluehead Chub (intermediate onmivore, 534% increase since 2013), replacing Highfin Shiner (intermediate insectivore, 91% decrease since 2013). However, the intolerant Piedmont Darter was collected in 2018 (n=1), and the pollution tolerance metrics (Number Intolerant Sp. and Percent Tolerant Fish) maintained their max scores of 5 over the last cycle. Also, several species exhibited young-of-year cohorts in 2018, indicating good recruitment - Redbreast Sunfish (n=14), Green Sunfish (n=2), Creek Chubsucker (n=11), Blueheaded Chub (n=4), Bluegill (n=2), Redlip Shiner (n=1), White Shiner (n=2), and Highfin Shiner (n=22). 2003-2018 - The fish assemblage of Brush Creek in 2018 appears closer in species composition to the 2009 sample collection than it does the 2013 collection. The 2018 NCIBI score was just 2 points shy of a Good rating (as seen in the first two assessments in 2003 and 2009), which could have occurred with the addition of just 1 more fish taxa such as Warmouth or either Pickerel species (thereby boosting the %Piscivore metric score). Overall, the water quality parameter measurements and the fish community shifts seen in 2018 do not appear to reflect a major change in water quality in this catchment. Data Analysis Watershed - Drains the northern suburbs of Fayetteville and is a tributary to the Cape Fear River (just over 4 river miles downstream). This low lying catchment is part of the Southeastern Plains ecoregion, bordering the southern edge of the Sand Hills ecoregion. Habitat - The riparian corridor in this suburban watershed is primarily wooded, and provides good instream shading. A sewer right-of-way runs along the left bank. Instream habitats include mostly sandy runs with some undercut banks and smaller woody snags, and infrequent pools (one deep pool exists at the end of the reach). Several areas with exposed clay pan, including one clay pan riffle located within the 600 foot reach. Clear, but heavily stained (tea colored) water as expected. There have been no obvious habitat changes here since the 2014 survey. 2018 fish community - Considering the naturally low diversity and biological productivity of this catchment, the Sand Hills NCIBI (NCDWR, 2014) was applied to this site (and 3 others in the Cape Fear's Sand Hills ecoregion). Five fewer species were collected in 2018, and a 72% drop in total abundance was observed in comparison to the 2014 sample. Four of these missing species were represented by only one individual in 2014 (not uncommon in oligotrophic watersheds). Yet, the percentage of key Sand Hills species (endemic or native to the ecoregion) increased (from 58% in 2014 to 71% in 2018), and a lower percentage of tolerant fish were collected in 2018 as well (25% vs. 66% in 2014). New records of Redfin Pickerel (n=3, top predator and key Sand Hills species) were also recorded in 2018. Overall, the Sand Hills NCIBI score dropped one point to a 6 in 2018 (out of a maximum score of 14 points), enough to cause a rating drop from Fair to Poor. 2014 - 2018 - Although Cross Creek is certainly a heavily urbanized watershed, the differences observed in faunal assemblages between 2014 and 2018 are likely not a result of changing water quality. Rather, this naturally low diversity stream may still be recovering from flow extremes and other related impacts (such as low dissolved oxygen events) caused by Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Data Analysis Watershed - Site drains northern Chatham and southern Orange Counties, and is about 0.5 miles upstream of the creek's confluence with the Haw River. Habitats - Although located within the Carolina Slate Belt, this site exhibits mostly Triassic basin instream characteristics. Wide intact forested riparians on both sides of the stream provide good shading at this regional reference location. Instream habitats are primarily sandy, bouldery runs with good pools, and a few small riffles. A section of the left bank in the upper part of the reach with severe vertical scouring and erosion from high flows. Otherwise the riparian and instream habitats appear unchanged since 2013. 2018 fish community - Good diversity and abundance, although there were three less species collected compared to the 2013 sample. Trophically imbalanced community in 2018 with 100% insectivores (dominated by Whitefin Shiner, similar to the 1st assessment here in 1998 when 306 were collected) and as expected, no intolerant species (1 intolerant Piedmont Darter was collected here in 2008). Overall there was a 6 point drop in the NCIBI score since the last survey, resulting in a rating decline to Good-Fair. The flux of species since 2013 (5 gains and 8 losses) are at least partly due to the proximity of the Haw River confluence, allowing for movements of fish in and out of the watershed. Species with young-of- year cohorts in 2018 include Redbreast Sunfish (n=9), Largemouth Bass (n=3), White Shiner (n=1), Speckled Killifish (n=3), Comely Shiner (n=12), and Whitefin Shiner (n=47). 1998 - 2018 - The fish community structure and NCIBI bioclassifications remain variable at this location, as species occupancies and abundances are likey influenced by the proximal Haw River. However, water quality parameters have remained relatively consistent at this location over 20 years. Species lost since 2013 - Roanoke Bass (6 collected in 2013, but not previously), Chain Pickerel (1 collected in 2013, but not previously), Snail Bullhead (collected in all previous samples, including 3 in 2013), and Carolina Darter (4 collected in 2013, but not previously). Data Analysis Watershed - Drains southern Randolph and northern Moore Counties with the town of Seagrove in its headwaters. This site is approximately 3.9 miles upstream of the creek's confluence with the Deep River. Habitats - Mostly forested riparians here with a few rural residences and fields bordering both margins. Instream habitats are high quality Carolina Slate Belt types, including mostly rocky runs and pools with small chutes and riffles. No apparent changes in habitats since the last basin cycle, and consistently high habitat scores for this regional reference site. 2018 fish community - An abundant and highly diverse fish community (including the intolerant Piedmont Darter) was collected in 2018, with a net increase of 6 species since the 2013 sample. Four of these additional fish species represent new DWR records for this location [Bluegill (n=1), Redear Sunfish (n=1), Creek Chub (n=3), and Eastern Mosquitofish (n=2)]. Overall, a change of 14 species occurred between the 2013 and 2018 sample collections. The gains in Bluehead Chub (an intermediately tolerant omnivore found throughout the Piedmont) are the main reason for the trophic shift towards a higher percentage of omnivores present in 2018. However, 9 of the 12 NCIBI metrics remained unchanged since 2013. Species represented by young-of-year in 2018 include Redbreast Sunfish (n=6), Green Sunfish (n=1), Bluegill (n=1), Creek Chubsucker (n=2), White Shiner (n=1), and Swallowtail Shiner (n=4). 2003-2018 - This is a highly diverse site, with a total of 35 known fish species collected here over three basin cycles. Water quality parameters and fish collections at this site have consistently shown stable water quality, with 1 Excellent, and 3 Good NCIBI ratings. Data Analysis Watershed - Drains east central Alamance and western Orange Counties, with its headwaters located along the I-85 corridor. Site is about 1.2 miles above the creek's confluence with the Haw River. Habitats - Mature forested riparians on both sides of the creek, providing good instream shading. Moderate to good quality instream habitats, including large pools and runs, snags, gravel riffles, and boulder outcrops. Stream channel is entrenched as noted previously, with some incised banks and occasional large downed trees along the edges and atop the banks. Overall, habitat qualities seem unchanged since the last assessment. 2018 fish community - A diverse assemblage was collected, yet with slightly lower species richness and total abundance than in past assessments, and no pollution intolerant species. However, one additional sucker species (Brassy Jumprock, n=1, new record) and two Largemouth Bass were collected in 2018, resulting in a four point increase in total NCIBI score, and a return to a Good bioclassification. Species with young of year present in 2018 - Margined Madtom (n=1), Bluegill (n=1), Satinfin Shiner (n=3), Green Sunfish (n=1), Tessellated Darter (n=2), Bluehead Chub (n=31), White Shiner (n=2), Rosefin Shiner (n=5), and Spekled Killifish (n=3). 2003 - 2018 - Historically a highly diverse fish community, with over 30 fish species collected from this location. Three of the 4 fish community assessments conducted here since 2003 have resulted in Good NCIBI ratings, indicating relative stablility in habitat quality and water quality in this watershed. Data Analysis Watershed - Drains the extreme southwestern portion of Wake County, and northern Harnett County, and is about 1.7 miles upstream of the creek's confluence with the Cape Fear River. Habitats - Bordered by residential properties at this crossing, with a thin but intact riparian corridor providing good shading to the creek. Instream habitats of bedrock riffles, sandy runs, undercut tree banks, and a few pools. No observed habitat changes since the 2013 fish survey. 2018 fish community - A moderately abundant and diverse fish community was collected in 2018, with the return of two darter species including the intolerant Piedmont Darter (n=10), and new records for Brassy Jumprock (intermediately tolerant sucker) and Margined Madtom (internediately tolerant catfish). A 37% increase in total abundance was also observed in 2018 (n=247, highest in 4 fish surveys here). Notwithstanding a loss of 8 metric points due to a trophic shift between omnivores+herbivores and insectivores, the overall NCIBI score improved by 4 points in 2018, resulting in a Good rating. Species with young-of-year in 2018 include Redbreast Sunfish (n=2), Bluehead Chub (n=2), Redfin Pickerel (n=2), and Speckled Killifish (n=11). 1998 - 2018 - Great diversity at this location, now with a total of 31 known fish taxa. Improvements in metric scores and bioclassification in 2018 are likely related to increased flows and improved recruitment connection with the Cape Fear River since the 2013 assessment. Overall, the fish community of Hector Creek continues to indicate good water quality at this location. Most Abundant Sp.Tessellated Darter (n=55, 21%).Non-Native Sp. Species lost since 2013 - Warmouth (1 collected here in 2013), and Bluehead Chub (8 collected here in 2013). Data Analysis Watershed - This site drains southeast Chatham County, and is about 1.8 miles above the creek's confluence with the Deep River. Although the site is located in the Triassic Basins ecoregion, most of the watershed lies within the Carolina Slate Belt. Habitat - A relatively thin, but forested riparian corridor is providing equal sun and shade to the stream here, with pastures bordering both riparian margins. Cattle still have full access to this section of the stream, especially along the left bank where a few access points exist (vegetative breaks where banks are continually trampled). A few scoured vertical areas also exist from high flows in the upstream part of the reach. Instream habitats are mostly embedded (>50%) gravely runs, with side snag pools of various sizes, and a few small riffles. 2018 fish community - A relatively sparse fish community with low species richness and no intolerant taxa (Piedmont Darter was last collected here in 2005) was collected in 2018, with the tolerant Eastern Mosquitofish enduring as the dominant species (56% in 2018, vs. 70% in 2013 and 35% in 2005). In total, about half as many fish were collected in 2018 when compared to the 2013 assessment (209 in 2013 vs. 111 in 2018). However, the number of species collected in 2018 increased by 2, with new records for Black Crappie and Eastern Silvery Minnow. Overall, the 2018 NCIB score increased by 4 points (4 metric improvements and 2 metric declines among 12 total metrics), but the site still rated Poor. Two species of young-of-year were collected in 2018 - Bluegill (n=2), and Redbreast Sunfish (n=3). 1998-2018 - This watershed continues to be impacted by sedimentation and a lack of BMP utility. Consequently, the fish community has declined substantially over the past few basin cycles (reductions in species richness, total abundance, and trophic structure), only to be replaced by a more tolerant fish assemblage. The fish community here earned this site an Excellent rating some 20 years ago, but Poor NCIBI ratings have occurred during the last two basin assessments. Data Analysis Watershed - Site drains rural northern Alamance and southern Caswell Counties, and is almost 2 miles upstream of Stony Creek Reservoir (Lake Cammack). Habitats - Mature forested riparians on both sides of the creek, providing good instream shading. Lower quality instream habitats consisting of primarily sandy runs, and pools with abundant course woody debris and dead falls, side snags, undercuts, and a few stick riffles. Substrates almost entirely shifting sands and fine gravel. As previously noted, this site continues to exhibit substantial habitat degradation from bank erosion. However, riparian and instream habitats seem relatively unchanged since the last cycle. 2018 fish community - A moderate to lower diversity fish community with similar abundances as previous samples, but including two new minnow taxa [Bluehead Chub (intermediately tolerant omnivore) and Creek Chub (tolerant insectivore)]. Species with young of year in 2018 - Redbreast Sunfish (n=3), Bluehead Chub (n=1), and Swallowtail Shiner (n=1). 2003-2018 - The fish community here continues to exhibit lower species richness (total of 17 known species from this location, all intermediately tolerant or tolerant species) and abundance (range of 60-88 fish present in the 4 DWR assessments conducted here) for a stream of this size. Physiographic isolation of this watershed (positioned between Lake Cammack and Stony Creek Reservoir) likely continues to inhibit recruitment opportunities of certain species during low flow years. However, the site has maintained its Good-Fair rating over 15 years, with seemingly stable water quality. Most Abundant Sp.Swallowtail Shiner (n=39, 44%).Non-Native Sp. Data Analysis Watershed - Drains northern Harnett and southern Wake counties, including Fuquay Varina. Kenneth Creek is a tributary to Neil's Creek, which then flows to the Cape Fear River. Habitat - Intact forested riparians are providing good instream shading at this location. Instream habitats are primarily sandy runs, mixed with cobble and bedrock, some undercut banks, side snags, and two very short cobble riffles. No apparent habitat changes have occurred here since the 2013 and 2014 assessments. 2018 fish community - Similar to most previous samples, 14 species were collected in 2018, but the composition shifted a total of 9 species since the 2014 assessment. Most notably, the Percent Diseased Fish metric declined by 4 points in 2018 due to a few observations of larval parasites. However, the Percent Multiple Ages metric improved from a 3 to a max score of 5 in 2018. Overall there was a 2 point decline in 2018, enough to pull the fish community rating down to Fair. Species with young-of-year cohorts present in 2018 include Redbreast Sunfish (n=5), Redfin Pickerel (n=2), Bluegill (n=1), and Pirate Perch (n=1). 1998-2018 - Since the 2009 assessment, total abundances of the fish community have remained reduced here. No fish of the genus Notropis (eastern shiners, North America's second largest genus) have ever been collected at this location, resulting in consistently lower than expected measurements of species richness. However, trophic stability has improved slightly since the 2013 and 2014 samples, with maximum scores of 5 for the three trophic metrics in 2018 (Percent Omnivores+Herbivores, Percent Insectivores, and Percent Piscivores). Overall, the fish community of Kenneth Creek appears relatively unchanged compared to the last basin cycle (despite the highest species count and lower-end Good-Fair rating in the 2014 re-sample), with NCIBI scores and ratings remaining on the border of Good-Fair and Fair. This site may be re-sampled for verification of its 2018 NCIBI rating. Species lost since 2013 - White Sucker (2 collected in 2013), Whitemouth Shiner (5 collected in 2013), Highfin Shiner (81 collected in 2013), and Flat Bullhead (1 collected in 2013). Data Analysis Watershed - Drains the southeast edge of Greensboro, including the I-85, US 421, and NC 22 corridors, and is a tributary to Big Alamance Creek. Habitats - Mature forested riparians are providing good canopy and shading here. A pasture borders part of the upper left riparian, but livestock are fenced out. Deeply insised banks continue to contribute sediment (and occasionally trees) to the channel during high flows, which is filled with loose sand (bars are common throughout). Accordingly, instream habitats are primarily sandy runs with side snags, undercuts, blowouts, and a few stick riffles providing minimal aeration. 2018 fish community - A limited assemblage of fish was collected with the lowest abundance observed here to date (n= 124, 70% decline from 410 in 2013), and a net loss of three species since the last basin cycle. Most notably, Highfin Shiner (intermediately tolerant minnow, primarily a pool and run occupant) was not encountered in 2018 (81 were collected in 2013, making it the second most abundant species). Turbidity increased markedly during the 2018 sample, reducing visibility, and possibly contributing to the lower number of species collected (and ultimately the 4 point drop in NCIBI score). However, the overall rating remained Good-Fair. Species with young-of-year present in 2018 include Bluehead Chub (n=4), Bluegill (n=58), Tessellated Darter (n=2), and Spekled Killifish (n=6). 1998 - 2018 - There are 17 known fish species in this small catchment, but no pollution intolerant species, and only one sucker (White Sucker, absent in 2018). Overall, this urban watershed has maintained consistent habitat scores, NCIBI metric scores, and its Good-Fair rating here in 5 assessments over a 20 year period. Species lost since 2013 - Pirate Perch (3 collected in 2014), Notchlip Redhorse (1 collected in 2014), Sandbar Shiner (19 collected in 2014), and Piedmont Darter (1 collected in 2014, pollution intolerant species). Data Analysis Watershed - Site drains most of Siler City in western Chatham County, and is about 0.5 miles above the creek's confluence with the Rocky River. This sample reach is located just upstream of the Siler City WWTP outfall. Habitats - The left riparian is thin along the WWTP property, otherwise wide forested riparians provide good shading here. Insteam habitats - Carolina Slate Belt type stream, with slick periphyton and blue-green algae covered rocks (nutrient enriched), abundant riffles, and a long deep silty pool at the upper end of the reach (pool just downstream of the long culverts running under US 421). No apparent changes in the riparian and insteam habitats since the last basin cycle. 2018 fish community - Despite the loss of two species since the 2014 sample, taxa richness and abundance are still good at this location. A six point drop in NCIBI score since 2014, mainly due to the losses of the intolerant Piedmont Darter, and Notchlip Redhorse (one of three sucker species known from this location). The only species with young-of-year individuals collected in 2018 was the Creek Chubsucker (n=4). The NCIBI rating of 2018 qualifies this site as a 303(d) candidate, which is further supported by the low NCIBI score associated with the 2013 assessment. 1998 - 2018 - A highly diverse assemblage of fish is known from this location, including 30 species collected since 1998. As previously stated, the close proximity of the Rocky River is likely having an influence on the species richness at this location, as fish move in and out of the watershed. Nutrient enrichment in this catchment is also a contributing factor. Overall, the fish community of Loves Creek continues to show good species richness in this relatively small urban catchment. However, an imbalanced trophic structure persists here with more than half of the total fish assemblage consisting of tolerant sunfish (exotic Green Sunfish and Redbreast Sunfish, both dominant in all six assessments). This site may be re-sampled for rating verification. Most Abundant Sp.Green Sunfish (n=117, 33%).Non-Native Sp. Data Analysis Watershed - Drains central Moore County and is a tributary to the Deep River (roughly 15 river miles downstream), with its headwaters located in the Sand Hills ecoregion. Low gradient stream characteristics are present throughout this Triassic Basins regional reference site. Habitat - Wide forested riparians and good canopy shading at this location. A previously logged tract just upstream on the left appears to be in regrowth. Instream habitats are primarily sandy runs with some undercuts and patches of woody debris, and a few short gravel riffles. No obvious habitat changes have occurred here since 2013. 2018 fish community - A lower diversity fish community was collected in 2018, with 6 fewer species compared to the 2013 sample. However, the intolerant Piedmont Darter (n=4) was regained in 2018, and new records of Eastern Mosquitofish were noted as well. Overall, there were shifts in half of the 12 NCIBI metrics (number of species, fish, darters, sunfish, intolerant species and percentage of species with multiple ages), but the total score and bioclass remained unchanged since the last basin cycle. Species noted with young-of-year cohorts in 2018 - Bluehead Chub (n=17), Redfin Pickerel (n=1), Redbreast Sunfish (n=1), White Shiner (n=9), and Highfin Shiner (n=1). 1998-2018 - Water quality parameters, including specific conductivity, have remained consistent over 3 basin cycles here. There are now 25 fish species known from this location. Overall, the fish community's trophic stability has remained unchanged here over 20 years, as indicated by consistent overall metric scores, and four consecutive NCIBI ratings of Good. Most Abundant Sp.Bluehead Chub, Creek Chub, and Margined Madtom, each with n=25 (18%). Non-Native Sp. Data Analysis Watershed - Drains the southwestern portions of Chapel Hill and Carrboro in southeast Orange County, and is a tributary to New Hope Creek (and ultimately Jordan Reservoir). This is a new basin site for 2018, located approximately 1 mile upstream of the Mason Farm WWTP, with the sewer right of way running alongside the creek. Habitats - Habitat qualities meet most NCIBI regional reference site criteria in this older wooded neighborhood, but developed (17%), and cultivated (12%) land uses are in excess of reference site standards, thus preventing qualification. However, high quality riparian habitats here include steep hillsides with bedrock bluffs, and un-cut, vegetated banks. Instream habitats include rocky runs and pools of various depths and velocities, and abundant wide riffles throughout. 2018 Fish Community - A highly diverse and trophically balanced fish community was collected, with over 1000 individuals present, but no pollution intolerant species (likely due to the moderately elevated conductivity). Of the 22 species gathered in 2018, 16 of them have also been collected downstream (roughly 1.5 miles below this location) at the historic BF15 fish community site below the Mason Farm WWTP (site BF15 was assessed in 1998, 1999, and 2013, but not 2018). No fish diseases were observed in 2018, and almost half of the species collected included young-of-year cohorts (indicating good recruitment): Margined Madtom (n=1), Redbreast Sunfish (n=17), Tessellated Darter (n=2), Flat Bullhead (n=35), Bluehead Chub (n=1), Speckled Killifish (n=22), Whitefin Shiner (n=33), White Shiner (n=2), and Swallowtail Shiner (n=13). Notwithstanding its urban non-point influences, Morgan Creek is supporting a robust and balanced assemblage of fish at this location, resulting in a Good rating. In contrast, the downstream fish community site located just below the WWTP has been rated Fair on three occasions in 1998, 1999, and 2013. Habitats - Good forested riparian on the left, but thin on the right where row crops border the stream. Instream habitats include sandy boulder runs with side pools and a few fast chutes. There have been no apparent habitat changes since the 2013 fish survey. 2018 fish community - A moderately diverse fish assemblage was collected, with one fewer species than the 2013 assessment, but with a gain in overall abundance (244 in 2018 vs. 131 in 2013). New DWR records here in 2018 for Largemouth Bass (n=2) and for Oriental Weatherfish (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus , n=8, found exclusively in silty deposits along the margins). This aquarium-trade loach species has also been collected from three other Haw River catchment sites in 2009 (Varnals Creek, Haw Creek, and S. Buffalo Creek). Specimens of M. anguillicaudatus collected in 2018 were removed from the creek and vouchered with NCMNS. Species with young-of-year present in 2018 - Redbreast Sunfish (n=27), Bluegill (n=136), Flat Bullhead (n=1), and Speckled Killifish (n=3). 1994-2018 - There are now 18 known fish species in this urban catchment, all of which are categorized as either intermediately tolerant (n=11) or tolerant (n=7) to pollution. The marginal improvements seen in the 2013 sample have persisted into 2018, with the same overall NCIBI score and Fair rating in these last two assessments. Data Analysis Watershed - Site drains southeastern Guilford and western Alamance Counties, and is a tributary to Big Alamance Creek (converging about 5 miles downstream), and ultimately the Haw River. Habitats - Mature forested riparians along both margins, providing equal sun and shade to the creek. The stream channel is entrenched here, with scoured banks throughout the sample reach. Instream habitats include deep boulder and bedrock pools, sandy runs with corse woody debris, side snags, and undercuts. No riffles are present in this reach. Similar habitat score, and no obvious habitat changes compared to the 2013 fish assessment. 2018 fish community - A lower diversity assemblage was collected in 2018, showing further decline since the 2013 survey. The fish community is now dominated by three tolerant insectivores including Eastern Mosquitofish, and two species of sunfish (Redbreast Sunfish, and Green Sunfish). Fifty percent of the fish species collected in 2018 were represented by only one individual. However, new records were collected for Flat Bullhead (n=1), and Margined Madtom (n=1). Species with young-of-year cohorts in 2018 - Redbreast Sunfish (n=38). Bluegill (n=1), Spekled Killifish (n=5), Cresent Shiner (n=2), and Bluehead Chub (n=1). 2009-2018 - Similar water quality measurements in all three basin assessments since 2009, but the fish community has shifted to a few dominant taxa that are tolerant to pollution and low flows. Species lost since 2013 - Mud Sunfish (1 collected in 2013, intolerant Key Sand Hills species), and Dollar Sunfish (1 collected in 2013, intolerant Key Sand Hills species). Data Analysis Watershed - Drains the northeast corner of the Rockfish Creek catchment (see 2018-27) in northwestern Hoke County, and is entirely within the Fort Bragg Military Reservation. Habitats - Extensive and densely vegetated riparians here providing good shading, with occasional spots of sunlight reaching the stream. Instream habitats are mostly sandy runs with woody snags and sticks, and pools of various depths. Abundant aquatic vegetation (Vallisneria) throughout. Dark, tea-stained water as expected. No apparent habitat changes have occurred here since the 2013 survey. 2018 fish community - Twelve species were collected in 2018, 10 of which are endemic or native the to region (Key Sand Hills species), including new records for the intolerant Sand Hills Chub (n=4). Total abundance of the fish assemblage increased by 45% (97 in 2018 vs. 53 in 2013). Two additional species were collected at this location for the first time in 2018; American Eel (n=3), and Creek Chubsucker (n=2). The absence of the intolerant Mud Sunfish in 2018 caused the only metric decline (Number Intolerant Species, score of 2 in 2013 vs 1 in 2018). Accordingly, the overall Sand Hills NCIBI score dropped 1 point (maximum of 14 points), causing a decline in rating to Good. This minor difference does not reflect an appreciable deterioration in either the condition of the fish assemblage or water quality here. Species with young-of-year present in 2018 include Redfin Pickerel (n=1), Pirated Perch (n=1), and Dusky Shiner (n=3) all Key Sand Hills species. 2013-2018 - Overall, high quality water persists here in this forested Sand Hills regional reference site. Data Analysis Watershed - A tributary to the Deep River that drains southern Guilford and north-central Randolph Counties. Polecat Creek is impounded about 5 miles downstream by Camp Nawaka Lake. Habitat - The riparian corridor is thin at this crossing, with row crops bordering both upstream margins. Vertically cut stream banks are common within the catchment. Instream habitats are primarily pools and sandy runs, with traces of gravel found in the deepest holes. Commonly undercut root habitats, and one or two small stick riffles within the 600 foot reach. No apparent changes in habitats have occurred since 2013, with nearly identical habitat scores. 2018 fish community - Large decline in total abundance (78%) since 2013, including a loss of 4 species. A higher than normal percentage of diseased fish was also observed in 2018 (8.5%), causing a 4 point loss. Overall, a six point drop in NCIBI score resulted in a rating of Good-Fair in 2018. However, many species had young-of-year present in 2018 including Redbreast Sunfish (n=9), Bluegill (n=10), Flat Bullhead (n=1), Bluehead Chub (n=1), Speckled Killifish (n=1, no adults collected), Whitemouth Shiner (n=2, no adults collected), and Highfin Shiner (n=12). 2003-2018 - While species richness and the overall abundance of the fish community in Polecat Creek dropped in 2018, the NCIBI trophic metrics (Percent Omnivores + Herbivores, and Percent Insectivores) have maintained their maximum scores of 5 since the first assessment in 2003. Water quality parameters have also remained stable over basin assessment years. Flow extremes in this entrenched watershed may help explain the decline in 2018, but that remains unclear. Hopefully this moderately diverse fish community (25 fish taxa known from this watershed) will rebound to its former species richness during the next basin cycle. Data Analysis Watershed - Drains a portion of the northeastern edge of Hoke County, entirely within the Fort Bragg military reservation. Habitat - Extensive forested riparians and good stream shading at this location. A portion of the sample reach appears to have been historically straightened or channelized, with some taller bermed banks. Instream habitats include mostly sandy runs and pools of various depths, with abundant small woody debris and detritus, and a few gravel riffles. Clear, tea-stained water as expected, with two species of submerged aquatic vegetation present (Eel-grass, and likely Brazilian Elodea). No apparent habitat changes here since the 2013 assessment. 2018 fish community - A total of 13 fish species were collected in 2018 (3 more than 2013), including 12 Key Sand Hills species (endemic or native to the ecoregion) and four intolerant species [Mud Sunfish (n=1), Blackbanded Sunfish (n=1), Sawcheek Darter (n=6) and Piedmont Darter (n=2)]. Species with young-of-year present in 2018 - Redfin Pickerel (n=1), Tessellated Darter (n=1), Chain Pickerel (n=1), Pirate Perch (n=3), Lined Topminnow (n=1), Dusky Shiner (n=5), and Margined Madtom (n=1, no adults collected). In addition, two Dwarf Waterdogs (Necturus punctatus, indicators of good water quality) were also measured (117, and 130 mm) and released. 2013-2018 - This Sand Hills fish community reference site continues to exhibit high quality habitats, water quality parameters, and fish assemblage characteristics, and has been rated Excellent during two consecutive basin cycles with the Sand Hills NCIBI. Data Analysis Watershed - Drains southwest Guilford county, including some eastern portions of High Point and the US 29/70 corridor. Site is about 2.1 miles upstream from Randleman Reservoir (Deep River). Habitats - Mature forested riparian corridor at this location, providing good shading. Entrenched channel here with some erosion occurring outside of bends during high flow events, but otherwise generally healed. Lower quality instream habitats are mostly sandy runs with bars, side snag pools of similar size, some coarse woody debris, and undercuts. One highly embedded cobble riffle was present within the 600 foot sample reach. Overall, there were no apparent habitat changes since the 2013 assessment. 2018 fish community - Moderate abundance was observed in 2018, but a loss of 4 species since 2013, including two species collected in all previous samples (Bluegill and Creek Chubsucker). The absence of Spottail Shiner (only collected here in 2013, but representing 32% of the sample), and the increase in Satinfin Shiner (16 in 2013 vs. 109 in 2018) and Bluehead Chub (16 in 2013 vs. 100 in 2018) are likely a result of migrations to and from the downstream reservoir. Green Sunfish have also become more established here in this urban watershed (8 collected in 2013 vs. 69 in 2018), possibly contributing to the lack of Creek Chubsuckers in 2018. However, no fish disease was observed in 2018, and several species were also represented by young-of-year cohorts - Bluehead Chub (n=20), Redbreast Sunfish (n=63), Green Sunfish (n=10), Swallowtail Shiner (n=206), Flat Bullhead (n=1), Speckled Killifish (n=14), Stainfin Shiner (n=26), and Sandbar Shiner (n=1). Overall, the rating changed back to Fair in 2018 because of the two point drop in NCIBI score. 1998-2018 - Specific Conductance has slowly increased here over basin cycles, likely due to increasing non-point urban runoff in the catchment. However, species richness in this urban Guilford County stream also appears to be influenced by fish movements to and from the downstream reservoir. Overall, fish community ratings have remained Fair here over the last 3 basin cycles, highlighting relatively stable stream conditions. Most Abundant Sp.Satinfin Shiner (n=109, 23%).Non-Native Sp. Data Analysis Watershed - Drains the central northwestern part of Hoke County within the western boundary of Fort Bragg, and a small headwater portion of southeastern Moore County. Rockfish Creek is an eastward flowing tributary to the Cape Fear River, converging with the river just south-east of Fayetteville. Habitat - Mature and extensively forested riparians provide good stream shading at this regional reference site. High quality instream habitats are primarily sandy runs with abundant coarse woody debris and detritus throughout, and frequent pools of various depths. Clear but stained, tea colored water as expected. No habitat changes since the 2013 assessment. 2018 fish community - Considering the naturally low diversity and biological productivity of this catchment, the Sand Hills NCIBI (NCDWR, 2014) was applied to this site (and 3 others in the Cape Fear basin). Nine species were collected here in 2018, one less than during the 2013 assessment, but with a 37% increase in total abundance. All but one species collected in 2018 are Key Sand Hills species (endemic or native to the region), including a new record for Sawcheek Darter (Ethostoma serrifer, n=1, pollution intolerant species). Two Dwarf Waterdogs (Necturus punctatus) were also measured and released, further evidence of high quality water at this location. Several fish species with young-of-year present in 2018 - Pirate Perch (n=1), Dusky Shiner (n=2, intolerant), Redfin Pickerel (n=1), and Chain Pickerel (n=1, no larger cohorts collected). Overall, the Sand Hills NCIBI increased by 2 points (1 point shy of a maximum score of 14), advancing the 2018 rating to Excellent. 2013-2018 - There are now 12 fish species known from this location. Rockfish Creek clearly represents an exemplar and scenic Sand Hills regional reference watershed, showing near optimal water quality parameters, habitat assessment scores, and fish community condition in this latest biological survey. Species lost since 2013 - Creek Chubsucker (collected in all previous samples including 10 in 2013). Data Analysis Watershed - Headwater catchment; this site drains northeastern Randolph and northwestern Chatham counties, and is about 4.3 miles upstream of the Siler City water supply reservoir. Habitat - Mature forested riparians here above and below the bridge, except for the left upper 2/3 of the 600 foot sample reach, which is bordered by open pasture and no canopy. Some temporary fencing was being used along the left bank, but livestock still has access to the stream just above the bridge (a hanging exclusion fence still crosses the stream near the bridge). A large tree has also been recently removed from the stream along the lower left of the reach leaving about 50 feet of bare soil to the stream edge. Although located in the Carolina Slate Belt, finer sand and gravel substrates are prevalent instream, possibly as a result of livestock access and other sedimentation sources. Instream habitats are mostly sandy and rocky runs, with a few side boulder pools, and a few embedded riffles at the beginning of the reach. Overall, similar habitat scores were recorded and no outstanding habitat changes are evident since the last assessment. 2018 fish community - New DWR records here for Snail Bullhead, and Yellow Bullhead. Notwithstanding these new records (bringing the total catfish species count to 3), and the loss of the one previously known sucker species, the fish community here is exhibiting similar species richness, abundance, and trophic structure as in 2013. One Margined Madtom with Yellow Grub, and 11 Bluegill with Popeye (resulting in a slightly higher percentage of diseased fish in 2018). Species with young-of-year cohorts present - Redbreast Sunfish (n=40+), Bluegill (n=5), Green Sunfish (n=2), and Largemouth Bass (n=5). 1998 - 2018 - Overall this relatively small watershed has been rated Good-Fair during 4 of 5 NCIBI assessments at this location, and continues to show stable water quality, despite its agricultural and other nonpoint influences. No apparent changes to habitats since the last cycle. 2018 fish community - Four fewer species, and less than 1/4 of the total abundance was observed in 2018 compared to past assessments (n=105 in 2018 vs. 484 in 2013, 470 in 2009, and 442 in 2003). However, the intolerant Piedmont Darter was collected for a third time here in 2018 (n=1). Overall, the 2018 sample dropped 16 NCIBI points and two bioclassifications from Excellent in 2013 to Good-Fair in 2018, mostly due to the lower overall community abundance, but also the absence of sucker species (White Suckers and Creek Chubsuckers were both collected in 2013 and 2009), and due to a trophic shift toward insectivores. Species with young-of-year in 2018 include Redbreast Sunfish (n=37), Bluegill (n=1), Spekled Killifish (n=6), Cresent Shiner (n=8), Bluehead Chub (n=10), White Shiner (n=5), Swallowtail Shiner (n=26), and Tessellated Darter (n=2). 2003 - 2018 - Historically this is a highly diverse site with 28 species known from this location. Although still showing good diversity in 2018 (notwithstanding the loss of 4 taxa), and similar water quality measurements over 3 basin cycles, this stream is currently not supporting the abundance of fish that it did during the last three asssessments (all with greater than 400 fish each). This watershed may be more prone to flow extremes than previously assumed (much like the adjacent N Prong Stinking Quarter catchment), and would be designated for resampling in 2019 if not for the Good-Fair rating. Species lost since 2013 - Creek Chub (11 collected here in 2013), and Snail Bullhead (1 collected here in 2013). Data Analysis Watershed - Drains southwest Caswell county, including the communities of Camp Springs and Cherry Grove. The creek is impounded about 3 miles downstream over the Caswell/Alamance county line to form Lake Burlington Reservoir (Lake Cammack). Habitat - Wide and intact riparians on both sides of the stream here, providing good canopy shading. However, the channel is rather entrenched, with several areas of deeply cut, vertical clay banks. Instream habitats are mostly embedded sand and gravel runs and pools, with several small stick riffles, and only one rocky riffle. Habitat qualities appear unchanged since the last assessment at this regional reference site (mininum qualifying reference habitat score = 65). 2018 fish community - A diverse assemblage of fish was collected in 2018, with most of the same species present as in past assessments, and including new individual records for Black Crappie (intermediately tolerant piscivore) and Yellow Bullhead (tolerant omnivore). As a result, the NCIBI score improved by 4 points due to the slightly higher total number of fish (n=286 in 2018 vs. 208 in 2013) and the additional sunfish species (Black Crappie). Species with young-of-year cohorts present in 2018 - Redbreast Sunfish (n=11), Swallowtail Shiner (n=4), Speckled Killifish (n=6), and Margined Madtom (n=1). 1994-2018 - With 24 fish species known from this location (but not including any pollution intolerant taxa), species richness and trophic structure appears quite stable over several basin cycles. Overall, the fish assemblage continues to demonstrate Good water quality in this relatively small watershed. Most Abundant Sp.Tessellated Darter (n=66, 23%).Non-Native Sp. Green Sunfish (n=6), Crescent Shiner (n=24). 05/19/94 94-21 18 54 Excellent Species Change Since Last Cycle Species gained since 2013 - Bluegill (n=11, 3 collected in 2009), and Speckled Killifish (n=1, new DWR record). Species lost since 2013 - Pumpkinseed (1 collected here in 2013), Golden Shiner (2 collected here in 2013), Whitemouth Shiner (4 collected here in 2013), and Margined Madtom (1 collected here in 2013). Data Analysis Watershed - This site drains soutwest Chatham County (south of Siler City) and is about 2 miles above the creek's confluence the Rocky River. Habitat - Mature but thin riparians bordering the site, with pastures on both sides and livestock fenced out. Stream banks are mostly vegetated in the lower part of the sample reach, but several scoured banks exist towards the upstream end (evidence of high flow events). Moderate quality instream habitats of primarily run- pool complexes, with good undercuts and rootmats, and a fair amount of coarse woody debris in the channel (some piled in racks). Riffle habitats are infrequent here. Overall, habitats look unchanged in comparison to the 2013 assessment, with similar total scores (69 in 2013, 71 in 2018). Water clarity was at the upper end of turbidity that is suitable for fish sampling (site would not have been sampled if deep pools were present), potentially reducing observations of species richness and abundance. 2018 fish community - A low abundance community was collected with more than 50% of the catch as tolerant species; Eastern Mosquitofish (36%), Redbreast Sunfish (12%), and Green Sunfish (7%). However, trophic structure metrics all received maximum scores in 2018. Species with young of year cohorts present in 2018 include Bluegill and Tessellated Darter (a few individuals each, numbers potentially reduced by low visibility). 2009-2018 - Eighteen fish species have now been collected from this site, with only one pollution intolerant individual collected in 2009 (Piedmont Darter). A slightly lower number of fish was collected in 2018 (vs. 2013), but a slightly higher percentage of multiple age classes was present. Otherwise, similar trophic characteristics persist at this location, with the same NCIBI score and bioclassification in the last two fish community assessments. Most Abundant Sp.Eastern Mosquitofish (n=50, 36%).Non-Native Sp. Data Analysis Watershed - Site drains central Alamance County, and is about 0.7 miles upstream of the Haw River confluence. Habitat - typical Carolina Slate Belt stream with wide forested riparians, notwithstanding the residential lawn along the left bank. High quality insteam habitats including rocky runs, pools of various sizes, good riffles, and abundant angular rocks covered with periphyton (evidence of nutrient enrichment). No obvious changes in habitat qualities since the last assessment. 2018 fish community - A few less species collected than in 2013 (lowest species count to date), but still good diversity for this small watershed (most of the missing species in 2018 showed 2 or fewer individuals in 2013). However, total abundance in 2018 was less than half of what was collected in 2013 (157 and 426, respectively). Overall, the fish community remains trophically balanced here, but still no intolerant species are present. Species with young of year in 2018 included Redbreast Sunfish, Bluegill, Green Sunfish, Bluehead Chub, and Tessellated Darter. Three Bluegill were observed with popeye (nematode parasite), but otherwise no disease was observed. 2004 - 2018 - Habitat qualities at this location remain high, and the site has now been rated Good in 3 of the 4 fish sampling assessments since 2004. Despite a very minor drop in total NCIBI score in 2018, water quality continues to be Good in this small, mixed use watershed.
