Specification: Alternate Piped Temporary Stream Crossing Bid Item 17
General
The Temporary Stream Crossing shall be installed just downstream of the existing bridge for
construction access across the stream. The stream crossing shall be constructed to the
dimensions and with the materials as shown on the detail. Approved crossings are as shown on
the plan detail, crossing consists of corrugated metal pipes placed in the channel on top of filter
fabric. The pipes shall be the sizes listed on the plan detail. Earth fill covered by large angular
rock is placed over the pipes. The crossing is topped with coarse aggregate No. 5 to provide a
surface for vehicular traffic. The temporary structure is removed upon completion of
construction.
Material
Temporary Pipe Stream Crossing shall be constructed of structural stone Class A rip rap and
Class 1 riprap, earth fill, and sediment control stone Coarse Aggregate No. 5 as detailed on the
construction plans. Coarse Aggregate No. 5 Stone shall meet the requirements for coarse
Aggregate No. 5 Stone as outlined in Stone section. Class A and Class 1 Stone shall meet the
requirements in the NCDOT Standard Specifications Manual. The corrugated metal pipes used
in the stream crossings should be of sufficient thickness to handle the weight loading of
construction equipment that will cross the structure without causing pipe deflection, deformation,
or failure.
Installation
The Temporary Stream Crossing shall be installed at the locations as shown on the plans and to
the dimensions shown on the construction plan details. For pipe crossings, base flow water shall
be diverted around the crossing installation area prior to construction. Filter fabric shall be
installed across the channel bottom prior to the corrugated metal pipes installation. Earth fill
meeting the requirements of backfill as called for in the Earthwork section of the special
provisions shall be placed over the pipes. Large angular rock and coarse aggregate shall be
installed over the earth fill as shown in the detail.
Maintenance
The contractor shall provide maintenance of the temporary crossing, throughout the duration of
construction, to ensure that the structure does not contribute sediment to the stream, the structure
maintains its intended shape and integrity, provides protection to the existing stream banks, and
is kept free of debris that may block the culverts. The crossings shall be checked daily and
maintenance activities shall be performed the same day problems are identified.
Removal and Clean up
The contractor as soon as possible upon completion of its use shall remove the Temporary
Stream Crossing. All rock, soil, pipes, and fabric shall be removed shall be removed from the
channel and floodplain area and disposed of properly. During the removal process the contractor
shall ensure that methods are employed to minimize the potential for materials being deposited in
