The request was submitted on your behalf by Anchor QEA and was received in the Asheville Regional Office on October 13, 2017. The request describes the creation of pollinator enhancement areas at the closed Champion International Industrial Landfill. The pollinator enhancement areas would include a garden, within the Sport Complex on closed landfill 5B, that would be constructed by placing 18 to 30-inches of soil on top of the cap in the general vicinity of the concessions building. The garden would then be populated with pollinator friendly native flowers and grasses and marked by educational signage. Additionally, the growth of pollinator friendly plants and grasses would be encouraged in other areas of closed landfills 5B and 5C, both on and off the cap. Based on this review, the Section authorizes the development of pollinator enhancement areas as described. Any substantial changes to the project must be reviewed and approved by the Section prior to implementation.
