RE: SUMMARY OF INJECTION WELL INSTALLATION HENDERSON COUNTY MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE LANDFILL, PERMIT NO. 45-01 HENDERSONVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA
Dear Jackie:
On behalf of Henderson County, Golder Associates NC, Inc. (Golder) is submitting the enclosed letter
report summarizing the installation of injection well IW-1 at the closed Henderson County Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Landfill in Hendersonville, North Carolina (NC). The injection well was installed in
accordance with the Corrective Action Plan (CAP), dated June 24, 2015, which was approved by the NC Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ, formerly NC Department of Environment and Natural
Resources) in a letter dated July 13, 2015.
On March 8 and 9, 2016, a Golder licensed geologist provided oversight for the installation of injection
well IW-1 in accordance with Title 15A of the North Carolina Administrative Code (NCAC), Subchapter 2C .0100, the approved CAP, and Draft North Carolina Water Quality Monitoring Guidance Document for
Solid Waste Facilities; Solid Waste Section, Division of Solid Waste Management; Department of Environment, Health and Natural Resources (March 1995). The well was installed by South Atlantic
Environmental Drilling and Construction Company, Inc. (SAEDACCO) of Fort Mill, South Carolina using a Gus Pech Brat GP-1100E drilling rig utilizing 6.25-inch inner diameter (ID) hollow stem augers (HSAs)
and a 6-inch outer diameter (OD) downhole hammer.
The boring was advanced with HSAs to the approximate saprolite / bedrock interface at 30 feet below
ground surface (bgs). Afterwards, the boring was advanced utilizing air drilling methods with a downhole hammer to the target depth of 65 feet. The injection well was constructed with 2-inch schedule 40
polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) screen and riser pipe. The 0.010-inch slotted screen was installed from 45 to 65 feet bgs. The filter pack consisted of Driller Service Inc. (DSI) #2 sand from 43 to 65 feet bgs. A filter
pack seal was installed from 41 to 43 feet bgs and consisted of 3/8-inch bentonite chips. The remaining annular space was filled with Type I Portland cement. The surface completion consisted of a 2-foot by
2-foot by 2-foot vault with a lockable lid and a 3-foot by 3-foot by 0.5-foot concrete apron. The boring / well construction log and Form GW-1 Rev. 8/13 are provided as Attachment A.
The well was developed on March 9, 2016, utilizing a Waterra inertial pump until field parameters stabilized and relatively sediment-free water was obtained. The well was developed for 2.5 hours and
approximately 72 gallons of water was removed. The well development form is provided as Attachment B. The well was surveyed by Regional Land Surveyors, Inc. of Greensboro, North Carolina on March 18,
2016. A sealed survey letter is provided as Attachment C. The location of IW-1 is shown on Drawing 1.
Should you have any questions or require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact the
undersigned at (336) 852-4903.
