separation was achieved between the remaining rock and the proposed base grade of the liner
system. Progress photos of the excavation and backfill of this area are attached. According to Mr.
Crouse, he did not observe any remnant rock pinnacles, or any indication that void spaces might
be present at or immediately below the surface in the remaining portions of the western cell floor
during his reconnaissance.
The eastern half of the cell was previously approved by Memorandum dated September 23, 2016.
DAA reviewed the Detailed Geologic Map of North Carolina (1985) to document the geologic
conditions in the vicinity of the site. According to the map (portion attached), the site is generally
underlain by metamorphic rock of Precambrian-age (amphibolite, gneiss). More specifically, the
bedrock is described as “migmatitic; interlayered and gradational with biotite-garnet gneiss and
amphilobolite”. None of the rock types listed would be expected to contain significant void
spaces.
In conclusion, based on the site reconnaissance and published geologic information, the
site does not appear to contain any “pertinent geologic features.”
Limitations. As noted above, DAA has interpreted “pertinent geologic features exposed during
the construction process” to mean pinnacles of bedrock and void spaces within bedrock.
Accordingly, this memorandum is not intended to present an evaluation of all geologic conditions
that could conceivable affect the subject site.
