Duke Energy is requesting approval to abandon Industrial Landfill No. 1 (ILF, 1812-INDUS-2008) Piezometer
CLF24-502, located within the footprint of the future Phase 5 of the landfill, to progress with site closure activities.
This piezometer received damage in a rain event in late July 2024 and has collected 11 months of groundwater
elevation data. The other piezometers in the Phase 5 footprint will remain in place to continue to support the
Geotechnical Investigation for the ILF Phase 5.
Abandonment of the piezometer will be supervised by qualified geotechnical field support that is under the direct
supervision of and in contact with a Licensed Geologist. The piezometers will be abandoned by a North Carolina
licensed well contractor in accordance with subchapter 02C of the North Carolina Administrative Code. Duke
Energy will provide well abandonment logs to the Division upon completion of the field work. A final water level
reading will be taken prior to abandonment.
