Only you can prevent wildfires! Careless debris burning is a major cause of wildland fires in North Carolina. Everyone needs to exercise extreme caution with all potential sources of wildfire ignition. Avoid burning on dry, windy days. If changes in wind direction or wind speeds are predicted, postpone outdoor burning. Before doing any burning, establish wide control lines cleaned to bare mineral soil at least five feet or wider around brush piles and other piled debris to be burned. Larger debris piles need wider control lines to ensure that burning materials will not be blown or roll off the pile into vegetation outside the lines. Stay with all outdoor fires, until they are completely out. Always check prior to burning for burning bans on outdoor burning.
