(If additional space is needed, use back of this form) NAME OF FACILITY: Hanes Mill Road Landfill PERMIT # 34-02 DATE AND TIME OF FIRE: March 4, 2023 @ 3:30 PM HOW WAS THE FIRE REPORTED AND BY WHOM: A call was placed to 911by an unknown person that observed the smoke. LIST ACTIONS TAKEN: The resopnding fire department doused the fire with water while landfill staff were in route to the site. Tarps were used as an ADC for the day. Three tarps were used covering an approximate area of 120 feet wide by 200 feet long. Once staff was on site, the tarps were moved out of the way to prevent further damage to them, and cover soil that was stockpiled near by was pushed over the area. Staff covered more area than the fire covered in case the fire spread under the waste. Tarps were re applied to a much smaller area to close the site back up. WHAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE: Unknown. It could have been a hot load, or a battery. Based on the location of the fire being in the middle of the tarps, it is believed that the fire started by something in the waste versus being started by a vandal. DESCRIBE AREA, TYPE, AND AMOUNT OF WASTE INVOLVED: Hanes Mill Road Landfill is a municipal solid waste facility, therefore the waste involved was residential trash in nature. The area where the fire occurred was in the active working face located on the northern slope of the active landfill. The size of the fire is assumed to line up with the approximate 50' by 50' tarp area that melted from the fire. It did not appear that much volume was burnt. The fire retardant tarps seemed to help contain the spread. WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO PREVENT THIS FIRE: Without knowing the exact cause of the fire, the only thing that can be assumed to have been able to prevent the fire would to have covered for the day with soil. DESCRIBE PLAN OF ACTIONS TO PREVENT FUTURE INCIDENTS: Landfill operators and supervisors will continue to monitor incoming waste for potential fire causing substances and will continue to conduct random waste inspections.
