Revised 6/15/2016
Hanes Mill Road Landfill 34-02
1/30/2023 9:30 AM
The fire was called in to Robert Pike by Gordon Dively.
A tractor-trailer with an open top trailer came on site with the load in the back smoking. By the time it reached the scales a visible flame had started to appear. The
truck was diverted from the scales and sent to the paved area near the onsite recycling area. The fire department was called. The fire department was on site in a few
minutes, where the water truck was positioned near the trailer with the fire. The rear gate was opened by the fire department and water was sprayed onto the fire. The
fire personnel then used a ladder to spray down into the trailer. They ran out of water and moved the tractor-trailer and fire equipment offsite, closer to a hydrant.
Unknown. The material ws coming from a demolition project within the City limits. Staff was told that it was a hosuse that had burnt down three months ago. It
seems highly unlikely that the waste was still smoldering and reignited in transit due to the time and wet weather. However the exact cause is not known by landfill
staff.
The waste was demolition debris from a house that had burnt down. It was contained within a metal trailer. Waste was not deposited on site. The trailer was hauled
offsite by the owner where the fire department completely extinguished the fire. The load was not returned to the landfill, and it is unknown what the hauling
company did with it.
Nothing by the landfill staff.
Continue to monitor incoming loads.
