NAME OF FACILITY: Macon County Landfill PERMIT # 57-03
DATE AND TIME OF FIRE: October 6, 2022 @ 11:00am
HOW WAS THE FIRE REPORTED AND BY WHOM:
Staff at the Recycling Processing Center saw that a front -loader load of cardboard was aflame as the rear door was opened. They instructed the driver to exit the
)uilding and dump the load in the gravel parking lot in front of the RPC. 911 was called and responded to the fire.
LIST ACTIONS TAKEN:
The fire department extinguished the fire with the assistance of a landfill skid -steer which was used to spread and separate the compacted cardboard to insure no fire
-emained. The remaining cardboard was allowed to remain in the parking lot for several hours and then placed in a container and dumped in the Recovery Building
rlongside the burnt cardboard from two days earlier. After a couple of days, and ensuring no embers or hot spots remained, the cardboard was taken to the landfill foi
iisposal.
WHAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE:
Unknown. The cardboard in the collection truck was apparently already on fire when it entered the landfill. Once the rear door was opened, and air reached the
,ardboard, whatever had been smoldering burst into flames.
DESCRIBE AREA, TYPE, AND AMOUNT OF WASTE INVOLVED:
There was likely 2-3 tons of cardboard in the load. The fire was contained to a gravel parking lot with no damage to any structure or equipment.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO PREVENT THIS FIRE:
I feel actions taken resulted in the best possible outcome of the fire occurrence.
