The lead firefighter on site did not know who reported the fire. It was assumed that a landfill neighbor noticed it and made the call. Forsyth County Fire was dispatched by the 911 call center. The fire department follow the City's emergency action plan and contacted Dwayne Stevens. Mr. Stevens, Senior Crew Coordinator, lives closest to the landfill and was first on site. He contacted Barry Harris, Solid Waste Supervisor, immediately after receiving the call from the fire department. Mr. Harris reported to the site and contacted three other equipment operators while enroute. Mr. Stevens moved the ADC tarps out of the way and other equipment to prevent damage. The five landfill employees loaded, hauled, and spread dirt over the area of the fire while the fire department sprayed water. The fire department left at 1:00 AM and the landfill staff finished at 3:30 AM. Unknown. Possible hot load that smoldered throughout the evening or possible battery discharge are assumed to be the cause. There were no visible signs of vandalism the next day in the daylight. Upon interviewing staff, someone did notice a stranger walking along the railroad tracks earlier in the day but disappeared into the wooded areas before they could be found. The landfill has been receiving large quantities of paper medical gowns and masks. The area where they were buried on that Friday seems to be the area where the fire was concentrated. The area that burned was approximately two tarp rolls in size (80'x300'). The material was at the toe of the slope of the working face. The area has be maonitored since the fire and no additional outbreaks or smoldering have been detected. Currently no additional preventative measures have been identified that would have helped prevent the fire. Employees working on the tipping floor and working face did not notice anything unusual the day of the fire. All employees have been trained to spot unacceptable wastes and to look for potential fire hazards. Landfill operators will continue to follow current operational plans including random waste inspections and keeping an eye out for fire hazards. Staff will also receive refresher training on the subject. The City is currently in the process of evaluating bids for new tarps and one of the key items is the fire resistance of the tarps.
