It was started in July 2016. The Solid Waste Section has agreed to a pre -approval process for acceptance of new municipal wastewater treatment sludge (biosolids) sources for feedstock acceptance at the McGill - Merry Oaks Compost Facility. • Analytical data for the biosolids should be run for total metals, by methods in SW-846, or equivalent method. • The results should be compared to the ceiling concentrations for metals in Table 1 of the 503 Rules for sewage sludge (Table 1 of 503.13), see below. • If the analytical results for each of the metals is below the ceiling concentrations for the metals in the Rule, then it can be accepted. • Notification should be sent to our office providing information on the new biosolids feedstock, including the analytical data, a statement that the results are below the 503 Table 1 ceiling concentrations, and a statement that it will be accepted. • This pre -approval process is for biosolids generated at municipal wastewater treatment plants. Analytical data for sludge or biosolids generated by industrial and commercial sources should continue to be sent to our office for approval, because of the unknown constituents. Table 1 of 503.13 Ceiling Concentrations are: Arsenic 75 mg/kg (milligrams per kilogram) Cadmium 85 mg/kg Copper 4300 mg/kg Lead 840 mg/kg Mercury 57 mg/kg Molybdenum 75 mg/kg Nickel 420 mg/kg Selenium 100 mg/kg Zinc 7500 mg/kg The 503 Rules are federal standards for sewage sludge and may be modified occasionally, and our rules would copy the change. They can be found in the Code of Federal Regulations, 40 CFR Part 503.
