Public Works Director reported the fire to David Powell, NCDEQ, at 4:00pm on 6/30/22 The City of Lumberton Fire Department responded and begin applying water to the smoking pile of vegetative debris. An Earthen Berm was constructed around the low side of the debris pile to contain water runoff. Stationary ground monitor and an oscillating water cannon were set up for continuous water suppression Rotating Fire Guard was established for overnight monitoring Condition of the smoldering pile will be reassessed on the morning of 7/1 and containment strategy will be adjusted as necessary. Appears to be spontaneous combustion however this has not been confirmed by the fire chief. Smoke was observed from about the center of the debris pile The waste is vegetative debris pile, about 40' long, 50' wide and 20' high. Stacking the vegetative debris in smaller wind row piles with less height may have help prevent this fire. We will research wind row storage of vegetative debris with more frequent grinding to reduce the volume of stored material. Rob Armstrong Public Works Director 630/22 6/30/2022 7/7/2022 Soil berm built, water sprayed, and fire currently out on 7/7/2022. Leachate will b pump and hauled to WWTP.
