The landfill no longer receives waste and has been closed for some time. Currently the monitoring wells and surface water locations are sampled annually. Previously, semi-annual monitoring was required, but in August 2000 the Solid Waste Section reduced sampling requirements to annually. Unfortunately it will be necessary to continue annual monitoring at the facility. The chemical cis-1,2- dichloroethene (cDCE) is routinely detected in groundwater samples from monitoring well MW-3. Because the compound is man-made and not naturally occurring, its source is in all likelihood the landfill. The old landfill is unlined and leachate containing any associated contaminants leaks into groundwater after each precipitation event. As referenced in the August 2000 correspondence (attached), water quality monitoring will be required at the site until there is no evidence that the landfill is affecting groundwater.
