NAME OF FACILITY: City of Raleigh, Yard Waste and Recycling Facility

HOW WAS THE FIRE REPORTED AND BY WHOM:
@ 16:30:00 PM
It was reported to the Raleigh fire department by a person driving by the facility.
LIST ACTIONS TAKEN:
PERMIT # 9213-COMPOST-1991
the fire department arrived on site and monitored the spot until Solid Waste Service (SWS) staff arrived. When SWS staff arrived the area of material was pulled
rpart. Once the smoldering material was pulled apart it was compacted. After all smoldering material was put out and compacted all personnel left the site.
WHAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE:
It was located on the backside of our fresh grind pile that we place into windrows. This is the area we remove material from for windrows. The pile was not
,ompacted on one side because the crew was going to be in the same spot in the morning. The loose material increased in temperature and wind caused some surface
naterial to smolder and burn.
DESCRIBE AREA, TYPE, AND AMOUNT OF WASTE INVOLVED:
There was a few smoldering spots and surface burns within a 30'x30' area on the side of the fresh yard waste grindings pile.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO PREVENT THIS FIRE:
The material could have been compacted on all sides.
DESCRIBE PLAN OF ACTIONS TO PREVENT FUTURE INCIDENTS:
At the end of each day, the working area will be sloped, tracked in and compacted.
