NAME OF FACILITY: Gaston County Landfill PERMIT 4 36-06 DATE AND TIME OF FIRE: July 5, 2021 HOW WAS THE FIRE REPORTED AND BY WHOM: the fire was reported to Gaston County 911 at 1:30am on July 5th. LIST ACTIONS TAKEN: @ L30am County communications called Public Works. Staff then called Barry Cloninger, Landfill Administrator. Harry called several operators and met onsite. They immediately began moving equipment and loading dirt. Staff was met by Fire Department personnel onsite Water and dirt were used to extinguish the fire. WHAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE: The landfill was not open on Sunday July, 4th. Barry Cloninger came by the landfill around 10pm on July 4th. He rode around the site and during this time he saw Four -wheelers on an adjacent property. He decided to ride all the way through the site to make sure nothing was wrong. It was assruned by those who responded to the fire that the causer was either vandalism or rogue fireworks. DESCRIBE AREA TYPE AND AMOUNT OF WASTE INVOLVED: rlre fire started near the current filling area in Unit I - MSW. The total area burning when staff arrived was approximately 1 o08 x l oo$. WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO PREVENT THIS FIRE: Staff covered waste at the end of the day on Saturday and came by and inspected the site on Sunday. We began this week replacing and changing the locations for trail cameras that are located around the site. Staff will also keep the but -tied area out of service for several days to ensure all hotspots have been extinguished. DESCRIBE PLAN OF ACTIONS TO PREVENT FUTURE INCIDENTS: Staff ensured all equipment was off the working face. Staff will be covering with extra dirt throughout the week and will be inspecting the impacted area. Staff' also has trail cameras around the landfill to prevent or lessen the potential for damage from vandals.
