November 15, 2019 Ms. Jackie Drummond Compliance Hydrogeologist Division of Waste Management/Solid Waste Section 1646 Mail Service Center Raleigh, NC 27699-1646 Via Email: Jaclynne.Drummond@NCDENR.gov RE: Burke County - East Burke Landfill, Permit No. 12-02 Gas Vent Installation Report LaBella Project No. 2192621.00, Phase 06 Dear Jackie: On behalf of Burke County, North Carolina, LaBella Associates (LaBella) is submitting this report on the recent installation of gas vents at the East Burke Landfill (Permit # 12-02). In our Landfill Gas Remediation Plan (LGRP) dated June 29, 2018, which was a combination plan for both the East Burke and Kirksey Drive Landfills, we proposed a combination of gas intercept trenches and gas vents as the remedy for gas migration at the East Burke Landfill. Specifically, two gas vents, GV-4 and GV-5, were proposed in the waste unit near gas probe GP-1 and monitoring well MW-2. On September 16, 2019, LaBella and American Environmental Group (AEG) mobilized to the Eat Burke Landfill to install two gas vents, GV-4 and GV-5, using a 36-inch diameter bucket auger drilling rig. The boring for GV-5 was advanced until it was clear that we were in undisturbed native soil beneath the waste. The boring for GV-4 was terminated before reaching the base of waste because water was encountered. The waste excavated from the borings was placed in roll -off containers provided by the County and later transported to the County's Transfer Station at the Roaring River Landfill for disposal. The gas vents were constructed of 6-inch diameter Schedule 80 PVC, with perforated screen extending from one foot above the bottom of the boring to four feet below ground surface and then solid riser to 6 feet above the ground surface. The annular space was filled with gravel to one foot above the top of the screen, a 2-foot foam seal was placed above the gravel, and then the boring was filled with compacted native soil to the surface. The approximate locations of the gas vents are shown on the attached Drawing 1. AEG's well construction logs are also attached. The key construction parameters for each vent are summarized below. Gas Vent ID: GV-4 GV-5 Total Depth of Boring: 30 ft. 46 ft. Screened Interval: 4-29 ft. 4-45 ft. 2211 W. Meadowview Road #1o1 i Greensboro. NC 27407 p (336) 323-0092 www.LabeLLapc.com e Monitoring will continue on a quarterly basis and in accordance with the Landfill Gas Monitoring Plan and the Landfill Gas Remediation Plan for the site. If we can provide any additional information, please contact me at vburbach@labellapc.com or (336) 323-0092. Thank you.
