HomeMy WebLinkAbout3402_HanesMillRdMSWLF_MSEWall_Aklignment_samplingplan_FID1286106_20190308i hdrinc.com 440 S Church Street, Suite 1000, Charlotte, NC 28202-2075 704.338.6700 Geotechnical Drilling and Laboratory Testing Program Permitting and detailed design of the MSE wall will require a geotechnical drilling and laboratory testing program to evaluate foundation conditions along the proposed wall alignment and to obtain typical properties of the soils that will be used to construct the wall. This information will be used in combination with previous geotechnical studies at the site to determine if localized foundation improvement, such as undercutting of unsuitable soils and replacement with compacted structural fill, will be required within the alignment. The geotechnical information will also allow the determination of typical soil parameters that will be used for detailed wall design, refining the MSE wall stability analyses performed during the preliminary MSE wall design, and estimating wall settlement along the proposed alignment. For estimating purposes, the MSE wall alignment is anticipated to include nearly the entire east and south sides of the landfill for a total length of approximately 5,300 linear feet. The alignment is assumed to be located predominantly along the existing landfill perimeter road. The proposed geotechnical drilling and laboratory testing program will include the following: • HDR will either self-perform or contract with a licensed drilling company to perform exploratory Standard Penetration Test (SPT)/Shelby Tube borings along the proposed MSE wall alignment at an average spacing of 200 feet for a total of approximately 27 borings along the estimated 5,300-foot alignment. The number of borings may be reduced if the existing subsurface information is deemed viable for final design purposes. The spacing of these borings may be adjusted to concentrate on areas where suspect foundation conditions exist or where existing geotechnical information is minimal. Proposed drilling locations will be flagged in the field by a senior engineer. HDR will provide a geologist or geotechnical engineer to coordinate drilling activities in the field and log the borings in general accordance with ASTM D2488. Borings will be performed to depths up to 80 feet with the majority being 40 feet in depth or to auger refusal. The boring depth is based on two times the wall height which has been estimated to range from 20 to 40 feet. SPT blow counts will be obtained at 5-foot depth intervals along with split-spoon soil samples. Borings will be terminated early upon auger refusal. A total of 10 Shelby tube samples will be obtained during the drilling activities to obtain relatively undisturbed soil samples for geotechnical laboratory testing. Rock coring will not be performed. Following the completion of each boring, the boreholes will be abandoned by pumping a cement- bentonite grout into them in accordance with NCDEQ requirements. Due to the existence of extensive groundwater monitoring data at the site, no new piezometers or monitoring wells will be installed as part of this scope. • Soil samples obtained during the drilling program will be shipped to HDR’s soils laboratory for geotechnical testing. The testing will include the following: City of Winston-Salem | Solid Waste Management MSE Wall Design Project 2 Laboratory Classification (ASTM D2487) – 54 samples Atterberg Limits (ASTM D4318) – 54 samples Moisture Content (ASTM D2216) – 54 samples Consolidated Undrained Triaxial Compression (ASTM D4767) - 5 samples One-Dimensional Consolidation (ASTM D4186) – 5 samples • HDR will obtain 5 bulk soil samples from the borrow/stockpile area at the landfill in order to characterize the properties of the soil that may be used to construct the MSE wall. After collection, the samples will be shipped to HDR’s soils laboratory and each sample will be tested for the following: Laboratory Classification (ASTM D2487) Atterberg Limits (ASTM D4318) Moisture Content (ASTM D2216) Standard Proctor Compaction (ASTM D698) Consolidated Undrained Triaxial Compression (ASTM D4767) – recompacted to 95% maximum dry density per ASTM D698. • HDR will summarize the information obtained from the drilling and geotechnical laboratory testing program in a geotechnical report. The report will include a discussion of subsurface conditions encountered and whether subsurface improvement is recommended along the proposed MSE wall alignment. The report will finalize the stability analyses based on the information obtained. The report will include recommendations for MSE wall soil backfill strength parameters that can be used by the geogrid reinforcement manufacturer for design of the MSE wall. Boring logs, geotechnical laboratory testing data, and the finalized stability analyses will be included as appendices to the report. Assumptions • The numbers of borings and geotechnical tests proposed assume that no significant adverse soil conditions will be encountered along the proposed MSE wall alignment that will require further delineation. • The proposed drilling and geotechnical laboratory testing program is not intended to assess environmental conditions at the site.
