NAME OF FACILITY: City of Sanford PERMlT # 5303-Compost-l 992
DA TE AND TIME OF FIRE: 9-30-17 @ 7:00AM
HOW WAS THE FIRE REPORTED AND BY WHOM:
Police Department reported to Public Works Manager
LIST ACTIONS TAKEN:
Fire department was dispatched to compost facility. They began spraying water on the woodchips that were burning. Compost operator took our Volvo loader and
began to tear the pile down so that water would penetrate the pile. The material was spread out and fire extinguished.
WHAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE:
Spontaneous combustion, chips were starting to charcoal within the pile and with change in weather, a fire started.
DESCRIBE AREA TYPE. AND AMOUNT OF WASTE INVOLVED:
Woodchips stockpiled from last grinding in late June of 2017. Woodchips are windrowed and the middle row at the bottom had gotten to hot and began to bum. Our
estimate is approximately 75 cubic yards was involved.
WHAT COULD HA VE BEEN DONE TO PREVENT THIS FIRE:
monitor windrows better and spread out if considered to hot possibly adding water if needed
DESCRIBE PLAN OF ACTIONS TO PREVENT FUTURE INCIDENTS:
Try not to build stockpile windrows as high and leave as much air space as possible, closer monitoring

Facility will not build stockpile windrows as high, leave as much air space as possible, add water if need, and monitor windrows more closely.
