As requested by Energizer, Pyramid Environmental and Engineering, P.C. has completed
the groundwater sampling of monitoring wells at the Energizer Landfill in Asheboro,
North Carolina. The location of the site is shown on Figure 1.
In April 2012, Energizer completed a landfill cell expansion project to direct all storm
water run-off from the active and inactive landfill cells to a retention pond on the east
side of the property. As part of the expansion, the property was graded and soil berms
were constructed to direct all storm water to the retention pond.
Three of the monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-2 and MW-3) were abandoned prior to
grading as part of the expansion project. In July 2012, monitoring wells MW-2 and MW-
3 were replaced with MW-2A and MW-3A by installing the wells in the approximate
locations as before. MW-1 was replaced with MW-1A in October 2012.
On August 25, 2016, Pyramid sampled monitoring wells MW-1A, MW-2A and MW-3A.
Historically, monitoring well MW-4 has also been sampled as part of the semi-annual
monitoring events; however, this well is located over 1,000 feet east of the Energizer
landfill. As directed by Energizer, MW-4 and will no longer be sampled unless directed
otherwise by Energizer. The locations of the monitoring wells at the Energizer landfill are
shown on Figure 2. The groundwater elevations and flow direction are shown on Figure
3.
All of the wells contained enough groundwater to collect representative samples for
laboratory analysis. The wells were developed by removing 3 to 5 well volumes using the
“slow purge” methods recommended in the North Carolina Department of Environmental
Quality (DEQ), Guidelines for Sampling (DEQ 2013). The wells were allowed to recover
and were then sampled according to industry standard procedures. The samples were
collected using new polyethylene disposable bailers, preserved in laboratory prepared
containers and immediately placed on ice in a cooler for shipment to ESC Lab Sciences.

The laboratory analytical methods specified in the request for proposal were used for
each of the monitoring wells. The laboratory results of sampling events conducted from
April 2000 through August 2016 are summarized in Table 1. A copy of the August 2016
laboratory report is included as Appendix A. Table 1 includes the current NCAC 2L
groundwater standards. A review of the data indicates that the laboratory results are
consistent with the past sampling events. The detected concentrations of some of the
compounds increased since the last sampling event.
For MW-1A, historically, the detected concentrations of iron and manganese have
exceeded the NCAC 2L groundwater standards, which was consistent with past sampling
events. For the August 2016 sampling event, the concentration of iron exceeded the
NCAC 2L standards and the concentration manganese was below the NCAC 2L
groundwater standards. The detected concentration of chloride in MW-1A also exceed the
NCAC 2L groundwater standard. None of the other targeted compounds were detected in
MW-1A at concentrations that exceed the current NCAC 2L groundwater standards.
For MW-2A, the detected concentrations of chromium, iron, manganese, and chloride
exceed the NCAC 2L groundwater standards, which is consistent with past sampling
events. None of the other targeted compounds were detected in MW-2A at concentrations
that exceed the current NCAC 2L groundwater standards.
For MW-3A, the detected concentrations of iron and manganese exceed the NCAC 2L
groundwater standards, which is consistent with past sampling events. Previously
detected volatile organic compounds (benzene, 1,1-dichloroethane, 1,2-dichloroerhane,
tetrachloroethene (PCE), and trichloroethene (TCE) were not detected in any of the on-
site monitoring wells at concentrations that exceed the NCAC 2L standards for this
sampling event.
The historical well gauging data for the monitoring wells are presented in Table 2. A
review of the data from April 2000 to August 2016 indicates significant seasonal
fluctuations of the water table depth in all wells, especially MW-4. Due to the
groundwater fluctuations in MW-1, MW-2 & MW-3, the replacement monitoring wells
(MW-1A, MW-2A and MW-3A) were installed to deeper depths (90 ft., 54 ft. and 50 ft.
respectively). The next semi-annual sampling event will be conducted in February 2017.
